A lot of people don't realize this, but crime (especially violent crime) was much worse in the city of Memphis during the late 1980's and early 1990's. The murder rate was over 200 a year for several years in a row during that time. Crime actually fell rather sharply during the mid and late 1990's up until 2003. Then it began to take off. Last year there were 166 murders in the city. Almost all of those took place in three wards of the city and over 80% of the victims knew the person who took their life. There is very little violent crime in the city of Memphis that is random. It is mostly located in the poorer areas of the city and it usually involves drugs and gangs.

There are no good neighborhoods in Memphis.....You may find a few decent blocks, but no good neighborhoods. Unless you're rich, you have to live in the suburbs east and south of Memphis in order to live in a safe community. The city of Memphis is horrible.

lots of houses for rent in the east are much nicer and safer than North Memphis. try east memphis 1st, I would look there before ever going into the north Memphis area. I wouldn't even drive through N. Memphis

My mom lives in midtown. There are some GORGEOUS houses in midtown and my mom has one of them. There are alot of older couples, gay couples, and settled families in this area. Unfortunately, there are also a strange mix of cultures and classes in this area that do force the crime up somewhat...like a really gorgeous street will be exactly one street over from a slum. I have to admit (being from rural east tennessee), I tend to be a bit nervous when we visit. But overton park is great and there are some great places to rent close to it. If I HAD to live in Memphis, I'd probably stake a claim there, although I'd be a little nervous at first.
The hands down best place to live in the city of memphis is Harbortown....heavily patrolled and super expensive neighborhood right on the water. If you can afford to move there (there are apartments and houses in Harbortown and they are all relatively new), do it.
If not, I'd suck it up and live in midtown or tuck my tail between my legs and stay in Cordova or Germantown and commute.

Be aware that housing is overpriced on Harbortown, more so than anywhere else in the city. They have a massive termite problem, and if the river were to flood, it would wipe out every house and apartment down there. There is also a bad odor on the island all the time. The houses are zero-lot line for the most part, and you can hear your neighbors talking in their living rooms because of this. It's a cute area, but it's just an urban suburbia if that's understandable. I know a ton of people down there, and the more I visit, the less I like it. There is probably not too much crime, however once you leave the island on the north end you are in a ROUGH area of town.

Burglaries happen in all neighborhoods. When you choose to live in a huge home with BMW's in the driveway, you are setting yourself up for criminals wanting to rob you. When you obviously have money, stuff like that can happen. Unless you put a 20 foot fence around your yard, you can be the victim of crime anywhere, in any city.
I mean seriously, are we going to point out EVERY crime that happens in every neighborhood from now on? Get over it. If you can't take the fact that there is crime all over the world, then you might as well just go hide in a cave and live off the land. Maybe turn Amish? Buy your own island and move there?

Let me start by saying I have never been to Memphis, and don't know anything about it. A good friend of mine works for FedEx, and had the opportunity to transfer there. He was telling me that FedEx had to build a concrete wall around their ramp area, because the airplanes were getting shot up while sitting on the ground. I thought he was exaggerating about how bad the area was. After reading the posts on here, especially the airport area posts, I can see he wasn't kidding. It sounds like somebody needs to burn the whole place down and start over.

I don't believe that for one second. I think your friend is embarassingly misinformed.
Besides, what would a wall do to stop people shooting at airplanes? The ramps are built up on the ground at airports... ??
But given the fact that you admitedly have never been to Memphis, your opinion of the city is quite irrelevant.

You think he is misinformed, or you know he is?
The ramp is the concrete area that the planes are parked on. Also called the tarmac. It's flat. It's not built up higher than the other area. A wall would block the line of sight, thus preventing people from taking pot shots. I have never been there, so I can't say it's there. How about you taking a ride out to the airport and telling us what you see? Maybe we can just wait for another FedEx employee to confirm or deny the story.
