The problem is that Memphis doesn't have enough police officers. For a city this size, there should be about 200 more officers on the force. I also remember reading that there were about 300 people on the city payroll that don't really serve any useful function..

I went to a meeting last Fall during the election. There were stats comparing Memphis to similar sized cities and the number of officers/citizens. Memphis' police force was much smaller than similar sized cities.

This place has been going down hill for year....I moved to Memphis when I was very young from the Chicago 'burbs....Back in the 80's and early 90's it was pretty nice...You could even go to the Mall of Memphis (Murder) and it was nothing out of the ordinary to do so..... When Hickory Hill's demographics changed dramatically (Seemed like overnight literally) the entire area became a ghost town....I think even big box/national retail has trouble keeping stores open in the area, because the only thing that happens is they get robbed and stolen from....I was leaving town when they built the Best Buy on Winchester/Riverdale...... THEN about 3 years later they moved the store about 2 blocks up the street, because it was a "better location"....Yea Right! lol....That town has had problems since King Willie laid his hands on the bible and became the "Black Jesus" for the entire town.... Welcome to the Southern Version of Detroit! Do not move to Memphis if you can help it!!!

yeah I was born in upstate NY...spent highschool years in Memphis live there for a bit after college...I must say while the city isnt an eyesore like detroit..the people are pound for pound the dumbest you'll find in the country...I hear people say bartlett, germantown, collierville, and all these other places are safe, then whitehaven frayser, hickory hill etc aren't... from what i experienced all of it was relatively safe as I couldn't name a place I wouldn't go after nightfall...besides if you're ever confronted in the city by a would be attacker just yell "I've got books with knowledge" and they'll most likely stand there like a deer in headlights.

Wow.....well, I was born and raised in Memphis. Pretty surprised about the "dumbest in the country" There are a few who are a product of their environment and then there are those like me who rose above it. I have since relocated but I still return to visit friends and family. Intelligence might be one issue but the biggest issue right now is crime.....and jobs....lack of quality entertainment......which is why I decided to pack it up

Crime in Memphis
The National Guard should be called in to control Memphis. I carry a weapon everywhere I go for me and my family safty. This is a pathetic city and very dangerous. So be careful because you will get mugged in a heart beat.
