Hi AZ,
I have lived in Memphis for 20+ yrs now from NJ
I was living in Cordova and Cordova High is a really nice school, you may want to check out housing in Cordova, Germantown ( next town Directly South of Cordova) or since you office is in Cordova you could try a little further East. Arlington just built a new high school and this is a nice area to check out. If I were moving to Memphis with High school aged girls I would stay right outside of Memphis not in the city. Crime is really high at this point and I think the schools are so much better than in Memphis. Cordova High is now considered Part of Memphis but still has that small town feel . For now.
Bye the way , I also have two girls now 22 and 20. They both graduated from Cordova High. They made me aware of some drug problems in this school, but do check out Arlington. This is a town you can get to from 64 HWYgoing East other wise known as Stage RD as you go west but its only a light commute of around 15-20 minutes tops from Arlington,, Houston Levy Rd will be a quicker way to get into Cordova from Arlington. All of your shopping will be easy from Cordova as it has any store on Germantown Prkwy that you can think of. The weather here will really seam humid to you the first summer. Much more so than AZ I'm sure with temps reaching what feels like 105 when its just 97 because of the humidity. My sis lived in AZ for a few years but when she came here for a visit she couldn't stop sweating. It will be a change for you, but one you'll get used to after a couple of summers. Have a good move.
Lynn

Default Moving to Cordova-Research first

Please read the other posts regarding Cordova/Memphis. While Cordova is generally still considered a nice area, crime is moving in quickly. We have lived in Cordova for almost 5 yrs now and we have seen a deterioration. Much of Cordova has been annexed and it now part of Memphis. The schools have been taken over and they are detoriating as well. Cordova high school is the only public school and it is VERY crowded. Cordova has also been in the new a lot recently because they are starting to have a lot of issues w/ gang activity. My teenage children came home and said they didn't feel save at their schools anymore. So we are moving up north. If yo do still move to Cordova consider private school, the private schools are a little better. If you want to keep your children in public schools consider either Arlington, Germantown or Collierville. Germantown and Collierville are not part of the Memphis schools system, but they are overcrowded as well. Arlington, as of yet has not been taken over by the city and since the high school is new it is not quite as crowded yet. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

Default Collierville is your best bet

Hey Az, I'm a cop in Memphis and live here in Collierville. These are the best schools in Shelby County right now. The crime rate here is low. Cordova has been annexed by the City of Memphis and Germantown although a nice town has a pretty bad Highschool due to the zoning. So I would look at Collierville first followed by maybe Arlington and Bartlett

The zoning issue with the Germantown high schools shouldn't be a problem after this school year. Southwind High School will be completed and open for the fall of 2007, so the students in the 38125 zip will be going there. Germantown will get their schools back. I would highly recommend either city.

Default Collierville!!

I grew up in Collierville, and while I hated it at the time, since I became a city school teacher, I thank my mother every day for making sure we lived in Collierville. If I had children, that is where I would be in a heartbeat. The schools are great and they are really a part of the community. The principal of the high school is awesome. Make sure that you are in the main portion of Collierville, if you move there. Some areas are districted for either Houston or Germantown Schools. Here is a link to where you can find out where a certain address is districted: http://www.scsk12.org/. You can get any information you want about Shelby County Schools there. I was never the victim of any crime in Collierville, and neither has my mom, who still lives there. We have been there since 1991. Honestly, I don't know anyone who has ever been robbed or anything else in Collierville. If you want any information, please contact me, and I will be morethan happy to help you!

I would not send your children to Cordova High. The elementary school is very good but the middle and high are having serious issues. There is always the option of private school - which a lot do for high school.

Areas I would look into - Lakeland, Arlington, Germantown (38139 zip code) and Collierville.
