This isn't the 1800's. Pick a hotel over $70 and you'll be fine. It's not like everyone here just shoots each other - be realistic, they don't have hotels over $70 in horrible areas.

Not trying to be a dick but I think it's funny that we're more worried about Memphis for a night than the possibility of war for months.....

To address your point - when I first came down to figure out where to live I stayed at the Wyndham on Germantown Rd. right off of 240 and it was perfectly nice - completely safe and close to the interstate and food (right across from Jimmy Johns which I love - walking distance) and very close to MANY other restaurants. Best of luck to him.

We like east Memphis for a hotel, BBQ Shop for ribs, Gus's for Chicken, Beale for entertainment.

Just wanted to stop in and say thanks to those who spent a few moments to give me some tips to pass along. Memphis was a good stop for him. He's made it to his destination in one piece and his Mom feels better knowing he's among people again and not completely alone. Moms of military people always have some worries (service, no matter what the branch, is hard on those left behind) and she is just at the beginning of the many moves so give her some slack for worrying about him driving across the country in an old car by himself. It seems like yesterday for me and I am still always relieved to get the phone call or email that my son has safely arrived at a new base.

Glad to hear he made it to his base. Mom's in general worry about their children no matter what. My wife freaks about our two boys to this day and they are 29 and 32. lol.
