The 14 story Residence Inn Downtown hosts a Sunset Rooftop cookout / mixer with wine, beer and pretty extensive cookline of grilled goodies and Memphis pork BBQ free for hotel guests every wednesday. The Peabody and the Madison have their Rooftop Parties with live bands for a couple more weeks. (Open to the public) Those three hotels have great river views from the roof. The Peabody, along with the above mentioned historic Duck March has free history tours several days of the week for all takers. The Hampton Downtown is right on Beale St. - good for late night partiers.

I have been here several times and for over a month this year looking at property. I have been in every area of Memphis pretty much, wandered around Beale Street at 3 AM, walked around Northaven, Nutbush and several other supposedly bad areas. I am yet to have a sideways glance or feel unsafe for a second. I am a guy mind you and reasonably big but I have found Memphians of every colour and demogrqphic to be friendly, funny and not aggressive.

Default Be Real

Memphis is a very dangerous place for good reason. Many people who have never visited Memphis has have a naive view of it. They associate Memphis with Graceland, the birth place of blues and good BBQ and that's all. They do not realize it is one of the most blighted and crime ridden cities in the U.S. I love Memphis but let's be real here. Yes there is crime in Nashville, Chatanooga and Knoxville but it NOT on the same level as Memphis. Only a places like Detroit, New Orleans, Flint, Gary, etc compare. Understand this and keep your wits about you when you visit. You can have a very good time here though.
There is no place like Memphis, you will see.

Regards.

So he would be ok everywhere else? What about Frayser? Raleigh? Uptown (at night)? Whitehaven?

Frayser and Raleigh are so hit or miss. You can't make a blanket statement about communities like that. I work in Frayser and have seen some pretty nice areas.

I've seen people walking in Uptown at night with baseball bats. I'm assuming (or maybe hoping) it's for their personal protection.
