I am 49 years old and was born in raised in Memphis. Memphis City Schools have a lot to be desired. Germantown, a suberb of Memphis is good. Shelby Cty schools for the most part are good. The fastest growing area in Shelby Cty is the Lakeland, Arlington, Oakland areas. The growth in these areas has happened quickly. Eventually, new schools, etc will have to be built in these areas and they will probably be very good. If I were going to go to MISS I would go over closed to Olive Branch or even Nesbit than Southaven even though Southaven would be a great commute to Downtown. I live in Cordova. Until a few years ago the county schools in Cordova were great, however, the city has recently annexed much of Cordova and the schools are becoming city schools instead of county schools. Also check out Collierville, TN. Stay out of South & North Memphis and stay east of the Hickory Hill area. Hope this helps.

You mentioned stay away form north memphis. I was thinking of accepting a job in Millington on the Naval base. What do you think of Millington and especially its schools.

You can do a school comparison of the school your kids go to and Millington. Just do a search for school statistics.

If your husband is going to the FedEx campus in Collierville, then Olive Branch would be closer. Be prepared to fork over the $$$ to put your kids in a private school because the public schools in the Memphis metro area are mediocre at best.

Tipton County. Schools are good, crime is low, people are friendly, and the commute to Memphis is tolerable (straight shot up Hwy 51 or Hwy 14). I was raised there the better part of my life, and my folks still live there. I'm looking forward to being there in a couple of months for the holidays!
Anyway, if you need info on Tipton County, just PM me.

I've been wondering lately - are you with the Oxford, MS Chamber of Commerce or something? Oxford is hardly an easy commute to Memphis, nor could Oxford employ all of the people you seem to push in that direction.
Besides, Oxford is a nice town. Why mess it up with a lot of people?

Oxford is a terrible commute to Memphis. I've known people to do it and they were miserable. It might be a quaint town, but it's a college town and is no where close to Memphis in terms of culture, restaurants, things to do, jobs, etc etc.

I had no idea people actually commuted to Memphis from Oxford. Good Lord. That's like commuting from Jackson or Dyersburg.
