Theoretically, the Summer/Syc View area is more south than Bartlett/Cordova, so I would guess the commute times would be a little faster or about the same. But, I have no clue, it's a drive I've made maybe twice total my entire life. But just from common knowledge of the areas, I would think the commute times would be about the same. We are definitely not talking a 20 min difference or anything like that.

Although - keep in mind, when I say Bartlett/Cordova, I mean that very noth part of Cordova, not further south down Germantown Rd. Then, yes, you add a lot to the commute just getting through traffic to a major road to take you to Millington. Bartlett has nice areas though, and I'm sure has plenty of fine apt complexes. However, for $500....I don't know. That is not a lot of money for Memphis - here was pay $$$ for safety, not really for beauty.

I lived in River Trace for a year. I agree that the area can look pretty shady, but during the year I lived there, I never heard of any shady business going on and all of my neighbors were friendly. A friend of mine has lived over there for 3 or so years and he seems to like it ok. I'd suggest checking it out for yourself, though.

I agree, it's all relative. The problem that I've seen is that often, you can have an apt complex that has a "good section" and a "shady section." I have lived in places like that, in other areas of town.
And of course, the problem with ANY apt complex is that you have zero control of who your neighbors are. Things could be fine now, but in 2 months you have some drug dealers move in next door.
For $500....you might have better luck finding something in Millington actually. Small towns will have cheaper places than Memphis, as (one would think) that the prices in smaller towns moreso reflect the actual complex and not just "how much are you willing to pay not to live next to thugs."

Thanks. I did try and search for apartments in Millington but I've only found one out of the price range. Any suggestions on websites to check? I've already tried Rent.com.

What's Frayser like? I found a very small home for rent there. It's practically sitting on the Mississippi flood plain though, or at least that's what the Google satellite image shows. Does it flood in the area west of Thomas St. and Frasyer Blvd?

Greenbrook Apartments are nicely kept up and are in a purely residential area. They're off of Whitten and Macon. A one bedroom goes for $525 there. Across are the Arbors of Century Center at $545 and they are well-kept from what I can tell as well.
Stay away from Frayser. That's a pretty rough area.

Frayser does have some okay residential neighborhoods here and there still, but overall, it's not good. Anywhere near the river up north is also BAD. That area is dangerous. Not just shady, but one of the most gang-ridden, dangerous areas of town.
And we're up on a bluff, Memphis is not prone to floods at all. Only the Arkansas side is.

Yikes. Not trying to insult, but I'm thinking that Memphis and the surrounding areas might not be for me. Sounds like way too much crime for my tastes. Granted, I'm not spending a lot on an apartment, but for the same amount of money here in Port Saint Lucie, FL I can get what I'm looking for and not have to worry about shady characters where I live. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the low crime rate here.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Any major city, y ou have to shell out a lot of $$ to live somewhere clean and safe. That isn't just Memphis. Try finding a $500 apt in NYC and see what you get. There are plenty of safe areas all over Memphis and the burbs, but if you don't have the money to live there, then I'm not sure what to tell you. Midtown will have tons of small studios and one bedrooms for $500 or so, but I beleieve you wanted to live more north towards Millington. Unfortunately, "more north" is just where the crime happens to be.
