Are you wed to the idea of living in Memphis and commuting to Millington? Covington, Atoka and Munford have apartments and rentals . They're smaller towns and might well suit what you're looking for. They're north of Millington. (Covington's the furthest - about a 25 minute commute. Atoka, Munford and Brighton are within 15 minutes or so). There may also be some rental homes there that would fit in your budget as prices out there would tend to be lower than in the city.

Hi Tigergal. I would be interested in those areas if there's high speed internet and a grocery store.
Sorry to sound so ignorant, but where can I look to search for rentals in those areas? Thanks. This gives me a rough idea where to look. |

This is the link to Covington's newspaper with some rentals listed for Tipton County. REAL ESTATE FOR RENT on The Leader
Tipton County has high-speed internet available and a few grocery stores (I know there are a couple of Krogers and a Super Walmart). I'm not terribly familiar with the towns in terms of which are the "best" neighborhoods. I bet you could ask on the more general Tennessee board and there would be those who are more familiar with the area. |

While it is not my cup of tea, for what the poster has been stating as their preferences, I think that Tipton County is the clear choice. South Tipton County is an easy commute to Millington down 51.
I would prefer Midtown in a heartbeat, but the poster already stated that they don't want to live in a big city. Atoka and/or Munford is cheap, safe, and still has all the typical shopping conveniences and fast food chain restaurants. |

Just to clarify a couple things about Millington.
Their are some apartment complexes in and around Millington. When I searched I only found one consistently. That was Big Creek Apts. They are reasonably priced. They are off the beaten path and look shady on the surface but are pretty quiet and affordable. The other ones I've seen in Millington also look pretty shady but I haven't looked real close to them. By shady I mean rundown, not necessarily crime-ridden. Millington has it's own cable company. Comcast does not do cable in Millington. Millington Cable handles Millington as well as southern Tipton County I believe. They have very reasonable prices and offer high-speed internet in most areas. Google them to find out more. It is generally a nicer area then a good chunk of Memphis IMO. I would agree to check out southern Tipton County as that is definately out of the city. Also check out the Shelby County Crimemapper to find crime trends in certain areas. Crime Tracker - crime.commercialappeal.com |

I was apartment hunting in the Memphis area last August. The only 2 places that I visited in Millington were Big Creek and Cross Creek. I would not want to live in Big Creek for more than a few months, because it looks like it will become run down very rapidly.
Cross Creek is rather new, only about a year or so old, and seems to be well built. However, it is expensive and is only a few hundred feet from Highway 51. Noise might become a big factor here. |

Millington has some fair apartments also. Cross Creek apartments is a new complex near walmart and highway 51. There's also Big Creek apartments to the west of Millington, aptly named after the nice golf course right next to them, however they are near a "shady" neighborhood, but there are no major occurences in the actual complex. Hope this helps.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I ended up moving to South Louisiana for a better job than what was offered to me in TN.
