Are there no barbers around that are affordable? My husband isn't expecting the kind of prices that he got on the army posts, but he was hoping to find a place to go for buzz cuts (soldier at heart, no matter that he is now civilian) that didn't cost as much as going for any other type of haircut that takes more time at a salon. Every barber he has called around to in Hickory Hill or Germantown areas are saying $14 which is the same as he would pay at the hair place in wal-mart of Fantastic Sams. Heck, most places we have visited even had $10 buzz cuts at the hair places in the wal-marts. Are all of the barbers actually this expensive around Memphis?

If all he wants is a buzz, can he not do it himself?

I'm not from Memphis, but my experience with barbers tells me that repeat customers get deals. I pay $15 (for an actual haircut, with a straight razor), but I've been going to this barber since I was a kid. $15 is a deal (compared to a commercial place, where they'll do a crap job)...but if I were getting a buzz? Why pay anything if you can do it yourself? Buy some clippers and have either him do it or you. It'll pay for itself after a few cuts.

There used to be a couple of reasonable places in around Summer Ave/Waring near the Krogers. My son and husband used to go for trims when we lived in Memphis. It's been a while so you may have to call around and see if they are still there.

There is a barber shop at 2199 Whitten (address approximate, per google maps) that consistently advertises $5 haircuts,
This is also close to an area with many rental houses, over the interstate, to the south. Safe area, but with large numbers of kids, although very nice kids.

Thanks Mali, I will have to see what I can find out about it. If I was already there with him, we would do the buzz cuts easily, but we are both hating the idea of buying yet another set of clippers when we already own 3 of them LOL. He also prefers to have it done as that way there are many less areas that get missed. My long haired husband when we married became a soldier who now can't seem to find anything he likes in a haircut other than a "high and tight" or some such simple cut that passes in the military.
