Default 'Hip' Urban neighborhood near U. Memphis?

Does such a place exist? Where you can walk to local shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, and the post office? Nice old architecture would be a plus too.

many thanks

The Cooper Young district. It is about a 10 minute drive to UM, max. No post office aruond there, though. It's still a very small area though, little shopping, maybe 10 restaurants/bars. No clubs. Downtown is the only area of Memphis that is walkable and has urbanish ammenities that you seem to be looking for (groceries, post office, dance clubs, etc).

Cooper-Young is a small urban neighborhood with hip restaurants, some trendy shops, and a few trendy bars. It's 5-10 minutes from the university. Downtown is a bigger area that has a lot more variety. It is 10-20 minutes from the university. The Highland Strip is an up-and-coming area on the edge of campus that is mostly dominated by college students, but has a lot of restaurants and bars.

Check Midtown, essentially the area bordered by Peabody to the south, Poplar to the north, East Parkway to the east, and Belvedere to the west. You've got tons of restaurants, the post office on Union, Schnuck's supermarket on Union, Piggly Wiggly supermarket on Madison, several 24-hour drugstores, Home Depot on Poplar, and the Overton Square entertainment district (arthouse movie theaters, playhouses, etc.) all within walking distance. You're about 15 minutes from the university and 5 minutes to downtown.
