gcdiane, ignorance IS the culture in Memphis. Especially in the black community. It's overlooked and accepted as the norm by all sides so no one addresses it. You will have plenty of time to see for yourself.

Why don't we try and show this woman that we're not all a bunch of rude, obnoxious people here in Memphis and welcome her to our community? If she decides in a year that she doesn't like Memphis, then that's her issue. We don't need to upset and anger people before they even get here.

Now THAT is the kind of attitude we need more of in Memphis! I'm glad you're coming here, Diane, because that mentality is just the sort of fresh approach this city could use!
I think you've seen by now that Memphis is like most other cities in one regard: it has its ups and downs. Some of the locals love it, and some hate it. Personally, I think it's what you make of it.

PBob, I did quite a bit of driving yesterday through Midtown, Central Gardens and Uptown. What boundaries do I want to take note of in each community?
London, inability to vision something different only inhibits us. Maybe you need a change of scenery? If your time is up or you cant see anything positive in Memphis - the US is a pretty big place. Get out a map and throw a dart...

It really just depends on the street. Usually if it looks nice, then its OK.

I completely agree.
Personally, I would never live in Uptown. It is RIGHT on the border of one of the most dangerous areas of Memphis. Now, if you're talking about the apartments that are right near St. Jude/the Marriott....those are okay. But if you are talking about the new homes that were built (cheaply, might I add) further north....no way.
Almost anything in Central Gardens will be fine. Just pay attn if the place is ACTUALLY in CG or they are faking it for advertising. CG is a historic community with a very strong neighborhood association, therefore you're not going to find bad areas. Of course, some streets might be a little better than others, but it won't be unsafe or dangerous.

Was wondering how you chose Memphis.
