Default Mud Island

I have Cigna insurance and I go to the Harbor of Health, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure if you are going to have two cars or not but Miss Cordelia's (the grocery store) and the Harbor of Health (the doctors office) the Montessori school, and the playgrounds are not within easy walking distance from everywhere on the island. Homes for rent in Harbor Town (the name of the development where they are located) are more expensive. I think you will have no problem finding a home for $2,000 in the other developments on Mud Island.
If you are going to have a car, I would have to recommend Pediatric Consultants as a pediatrician for your child which is about 10mins from Mud Island. Although I like the Harbor of Health it is just a general doctor office. Plus, to get any kind of an appointment you have to call at 7am on the day you want an appointment. A couple times I've called in the mornings and they were already booked full for the day. When you have a sick child you don't want to wait and try the next day.
By the way, there are a lot of young families from all over living here on the island, it should be very easy to meet other moms.

Evergreen Presbyterian Church has a great playschool that my kids went to. It's 5 to 10 minutes from Mud Island right by the zoo. First Baptist Church at Poplar and East Parkway has a very good program, also.

Default thanks

Thanks for the great info! My husband is potentially coming to Memphis next week to look at a house that we found on MI that will be ready to rent in June. It's 3 bedroom/2 bathroom for $1700. He's also going to look at a few other homes for the sake of comparison.

I'm glad to hear that there are many young families on the island. I will not be working while my husband is completing his residency, so I will be looking for things to do and people to meet!!

Default North end of MI

Can anyone tell me a bit more about Mud Island itself? I know that Harbor Town is one of the developements, but what about developments at the northern end of MI? What are they like?

We found a potential potential rental home both in Harbor Town (Harbor Village Dr) and at the north end of MI (Island Bluff Dr). Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

It's all basically the same out there; all brand new cookie-cutter looking homes. Like suburban, pastel colors, etc.

The island is very long and "thin." It's on the river, with the river going around the island so-to-speak. Island Drive runs the entire length of the island, with maybe 4 streets that go off of it, going back into neighborhoods. The commercial area is on the south part of the island (the school, deli, medical facility, etc). The island is really big; people jog up and down the park along the river, but if you lived on the north end back in the neighborhoods, you couldn't walk to the deli and pick up groceries and walk back. The neighborhoods are windy (wind-ie?) , and confusing. It all looks the same to me, the street names are so similar, and like I said although the island isn't huge, the streets are so complex that it's not possible to walk from end to end unless you're out for exercise only.

Nice photos! You can see how the houses are all jammed together though, most everything there is zero lot line.

That last photo does a good job at showing how the river goes around the "island." (keep in mind, it's not actually an island. it's like a penninsula, with a bridge at one end, and then just a road on the other end that goes into a very dangerous part of town)
