The state doesn't want to. Let's be honest here....the republicans in the suburbs and in the Memphis region might want to see it happen, but the republicans in Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville would never agree to it. Even though the majority leader is from Collierville, the region as a whole has spent a lot of political capital solving the school situation in a way that is mutually beneficial to both the suburbs and the city. The Democrats in Memphis are too incompetent and powerless do make anything happen. They are too busying fighting with each other to get fellow democrats from Nashville or Knoxville behind them.

But yeah, a state takeover wouldn't be a bad thing. The local politicans can sort of blame the state for making the tough decisions they don't want to make - like cutting overhead, switching to a defined contribution plans, and possibly reforming the pension system.

All of that has to be addressed before a merger could really happen. Just punting it to the suburbs in Shelby County is going to run into huge roadblocks in Nashville. For all the wealth in the suburbs that makes the thought of an exploitative merger attractive to some very short sighted Memphians, it would evaporate rapidly if this wasn't mutually beneficial.

Two episodes of flash mobs along Poplar Avenue in a span of over seven months are highly concerning. Businesses that are invaded by flash mobs worry about staying in business.

Kroger, as any large chain store company, can and do close unprofitable or troubled locations.

This last attack was at the gas station across the street I believe, the one that gets over-run with students from that nearby high school/tech school. I'm surprised this is the first time something of this magnitude happened, given the large number of students hanging out on that corner every day.

I don't believe for a second that the Poplar Plaza Kroger is unprofitable or troubled. The current building is a brand new upscale replacement for their old Poplar Plaza location. I'm as displeased as anybody by the actions of these foolish hoodrats, but Poplar Plaza is really doing fine. It's right by the University, Chickasaw Gardens, and High Point. It's a very desirable location.

Considering the money Kroger has pumped into both its Crosstown and Poplar Plaza locations, I highly doubt it's moving anytime soon.

The more important thing to discuss, and the point of this thread, is - wow, these kids come from disintegrated families.

What's the story with the school? I mean, is this a typical Memphis HS (I hope not) or a school for kids with control issues? Has anyone heard what actions they might be taking or what they have said about it? Not that they are responsible for this of course but since these kids are from there I'd think they'd have some influence over them.

First guy was arrested at NW Prep Academy apparently. That's the tech school on Poplar nearby (not sure if it's still a "tech school" but that's what the old sign out front used to say. It's a Memphis public school. Supposedly these "prep academies" are supposed to be a higher standard, an alternative to the crap-shows going on in other public schools, but it doesn't seem like there is much difference.
