few memphis questions from a transplant
Hey!
Just moved to memphis a little over a week ago. I have a few questions. If anyone could help that'd be great. Don't have to know all the answers...just answer what you know.
First, I'm in midtown...where do I get my car inspected, and where is the closest bmv/dmv? where's the closest post office for that matter.
Also, I'm looking to join a gym here, anyone have any suggestions. I belonged to an all women gym in my old state, and I like those. It wasn't curves, I've never really tried those...any experiences. I work and live in midtown so proximity is nice.
Also, what's Ike's Drug?
Second to last question: I don't have cable(don't need to pay) but I still enjoy tv. Right now I don't have an antenna and I'm picking up NBC, CBS, Fox, and PBS. If I got and antenna would I be able to pick up anymore. I really like LOST and want to be able to watch it.
And finally closest Target. I've been to the one at Wolfechase, but wondered if there were any closer.
Thanks so much for all the information.

The closest and by far the best car iinspection is downtown on...Adams? Jefferson? right east of Danny Thomas. Maybe it's Washington actually. Regardless, it opens at 7am or so, get there about 15 min before it opens and get in line....it backs up and goes sloooooow. But it's 100x better than the place out on Summer. The place to get your tags is in the courthouse downtown on Washington.
Post office is on Union east of Kimbrough. Open good hours, but can get very crowded.
There is a YMCA downtown, as well as a Wellworx. There really isn't a big gym in midtown, I wish!!!
Ike's is like a Walgreens.
I haven't had an antenna on my tv since I was probably 5 years old, so I can't help you there. I don't know anyone who doesn't have cable...so I'm not sure on that question.
Don't go to Wolfchase for anything, what a nightmare. There is a Target off of Southern east of the U of M. It's not a super store, just a regular Target, but that should meet your needs.

You may want to head down Germantown Parkway for the Germantown Gym, not sure what they call it but it is a good health spa. That is only a few miles, maybe 5, and then after you work out you can hit all the good dining facilities along GT Parkway. Great Ice Cream at Brewsters, on the right side just past the little bridge crossing the Wolf River.

If you're in midtown, there's a target off of poplar (south of the rr tracks) east of Oak Court mall. Near the Hilton hotel tech center. Don't know the major cross streets, but there's a Dan McGuiness (restaurant/bar) in the same strip center. I'm too lazy to google it.
Edit: Ooo. I think it's off Perkins (n/s) between e/w streets Poplar and Park.

The Target is on Spottswood, but visible from Poplar. The major cross street is Colonial. There is a traffic light at Colonial and Poplar, right at the Burger King.

I would not suggest joining a gym 20 minutes away in Germantown or Cordova when you live in Midtown. Don't we already have enough reasons to convince ourselves "I'll go tommorrow" ?? A 30 minute drive isn't going to help
There is a French Riviera at Highland and Poplar, and that wouldn't be TOO far out of the way to drive. Wellworx and the Y would still be closer.
And for whoever asked, I think Wolfchase is a traffic and people nightmare. The congestion, the chain restaurants, the ugliness of the area. It's a long drive from midtown to sit in traffic, park 300 yards away from the front door of the mall, push past dozens of kids running around, etc etc. I just prefer the calmness of other shopping and eating areas.

Midtown Gym: Started by 2 women 11 years ago--
Inside Out Gym
I have a TV antenna- I bought a powered one that plugs in-- it works better than a passive one. I get channels 3, 5, 10, 13, 24, 30, 40, 42, 50 and a few ghosts from other channels. If I had a roof antenna maybe the ghost channels would come in better.
