Hello! My husband and I are possibly moving to Memphis in the beginning of 2015. We are 27 & 26 with no children but have two dogs. We currently live in Hoover, Alabama but spend a lot of time in the Homewood and Birmingham areas. Can anyone compare Birmingham area neighborhoods to Memphis area neighborhoods so that I can get a general idea? We are hoping to be in a younger neighborhood.

Midtown and downtown. Specifically, maybe the South Main area, Cooper Young, Overton Square area? Those are the night-life hotspots. I have been to B-ham but don't know the names of the neighborhoods so I cannot compare.

We will be renting. We would like to rent a home with a backyard if possible but if not maybe a nice apartment or loft with nearby parks.

With two dogs, you might consider a house in Midtown. As noted, Cooper-Young and Overton Square have lots of young people and plenty of restaurants and night spots.

Cooper Young is a mecca for people who love dogs and pets. I'm sure you could find a rental there that accepts dogs.

There is an off-leash enclosed dog park in Overton Park (where the zoo, golf course, art museum, etc are located). It is not walkable to Cooper Young, but it could be walkable from some areas around Evergreen historic district as well as the Overton Square area. I'm not sure how easy it is to find a reasonably priced house for rent there that has a yard and accepts dogs though. CY and Overton are a quick 2-5 minute drive from one another though.

If you are working downtown, then look at downtown, mud island, or mid town....but get an alarm. Memphis has some pretty serious crime problems. I'd start looking in Overton Square area or Cooper Young. If you don't like them, go further east past U of Memphis between Poplar and Walnut Grove.

If you are working in east Memphis, I would recommed east Memphis or the eastern suburbs.

Stay out of north Memphis, south Memphis, Hickory Hill, Tillman, or anything north of Sam Cooper.

You don't live too far away, I'd suggest coming up here for a couple weekends or maybe a full week to check out area. It's very hard to get a feel for a neighborhood here until you spend some time looking at it, day and night, week and weekends.
