I-385 is open up in the Arlington area as well and gives good access to the Interstate.

Yes getting more east in the county provides a shelter from some of the crime in the city. I am sure you can find suitable options in those areas mentioned in earlier posts. Not sure about AR and commuting in from there although many do. Just too many trucks on those roads and bridges.

These areas are rural. Also check the convenience and commute factors.

Hi Curbysgal -

I am in the exact same boat as you. My husband is considering the move to Memphis this spring to accept an offer with the fire dept, and we are from a smaller town in South Dakota, so it will be a big change for us. So know that there is someone out there feeling just like you do! I have done alot of traveling for my job to larger cities (NYC, Chicago, Phoenix, etc) and they are right, there is no "safe" bubble that people can move into where nothing will ever happen to them. There's always a chance that something could happen, but that's true even in a small town. My grandparents live in a town less than 13,000 people - and they had their car stolen one night!

I'm looking to rent a home with a security system, maybe take a self protection class in the meantime, and keep my eyes open. That's the best you can do I think. We have been in an apartment for a few years now - and I'm just tired of the cramped space, otherwise I would be looking for apartments too. The idea of a garage to house our vehicles at night appeals to me too. My husband says the other firemen seem to recommend Germantown and Cordova as being nice places, but the jury is still out on where we will live.

Would love to compare notes! - "A fellow small town gal".

Be prepared for violence, noise, poor sanitation (trash & dead animals can lie in the streets for days) sexually transmitted disease is rampant, deteriorating infrastructure (streets & roads in poor condition, frequent utility outages, etc., etc.) very inadequate schools, unresponsive government, some of the highest sales tax & crime rates in the nation and racism.$9.00 or $10.00 an hour is considered a good wage in Memphis.Street gangs are everywhere. Law enforcement is incompetent, selective and politically motivated. If you must move to Memphis you would do well to move into a gated community in the easternmost part of the city but crime is rampant throughout Memphis & Shelby County (including Germantown) but the North, Southwest, South, Parkway Village, Fox Meadows & Hickory Hill areas are particularly dangerous.I would not rely on crime statistics from local government or law enforcement. Many in Memphis fear the police as much as the criminals and don't report crime. If you visit Memphis take drive down Elvis Presley, Lamar, Brooks Rd, Danny Thomas, Hollywood, Summer, JacksonI would suggest talking to people in the surrounding counties (Tipton, Fayette, DeSoto) and getting their opinion of the quality of life in Memphis.Everyone I know that can afford to is leaving Memphis.I would NOT raise a family in Memphis.

This is absolutely the most laughable thing I have read. Yet, sad at the same time that someone took time out of their life to write this out.

Wow... such a bitter post! I just moved to Memphis from LA a month ago and I can assure you that I have had no run-ins with any week-long dead animals or contracted any STDs! Haha But seriously, what this person just described sounds like a third world country, and I would know as I was born in one. Please pay it no attention. (On a side note, the poster mentioned that Memphis has one of the highest sales tax rates in the country, which is true- 9.25%, but he fails to mention that there is no income tax.)

That's funny. I've lived here my whole life and I've seen all of it.

It really baffles me. Most of the people who love the city hate the mayor but he's largely responsible for the city's "progress". Your only complaint is that his cronies got rich off of contracts. If you're so delighted with the city then it shouldn't matter who got paid.
