How come Macy's is leaving its store located at the Southland Mall? I am disappointed that Macy's isn't gonna be around much longer at the Southland Mall considering they've been there for ages.

For the same reason it is closing 12-13 stores in other cities. Not making enough money.

Actually Macy was at Southland for only about eight years. It was Goldsmith's that was at the mall all those years until Federated Dept. Stores bought R.H. Macy Co. and rebranded all the Federated stores, including Goldsmith's.

Macy would have never opened a store at Southland, so its demise is no surprise.

Most likely HIGH theft rates. I knew a long time employee at the Sears store and the losses due to theft were staggering!

Sears will be gone before long as well. Sure it is due to very high theft rates and declining sales.

Southland Mall is also on the decline. I was last there at least five years ago. It's going the way of Metrocenter down here in Jackson. When anchors start leaving, that's not good news.

It's basically what happened to Hickory Hollow Mall in Antioch. The demographics changed dramatically, incomes decreased, and crime increased. Stores were no longer profitable in a situation like that so it closed. There are reuses such as Nashville State, an ice rink, and public space, but the retailers and restaurants are just not coming back. The new area is on the other side of the interstate near Cane Ridge where they are planning a mixed use open air development that will hopefully spark a rebirth.
