Hello all. My wife and I will be moving to Memphis soon with a new born I will be working near the airport and she works from home. I'm looking to be within 20 minutes of the airport. Closer the better. We are looking for a 2 bedroom apartment/town house in a safe area. Bars/restaurants do not have to be within walking distance. I don't mind driving.

Will Collierville be too far? Arlington? I'm trying to get a list going so I can drive over soon and check some places out. So far I have Mud Island as a possibility.

Thanks!

Do you prefer urban or suburban? I live in Cooper Young and it's 10 minutes away from the airport.

what part of Nashville did you live in and do you want something similar to that? Just curious myself. I am new in Nashville (so I can't help in any way!)

You'll find many restaurants and bars close by if you are in midtown (close to the Cooper-Young area, as mentioned above), while still being close to the airport.

From Collierville to the airport it will be a little more than 20 minutes, but under 30 in most conditions. Arlington will be further. Travel is not nearly as stressful in Memphis as it is in Nashville.

Cooper-Young is a fun neighborhood, but don't rule out the adjoining areas of Central Gardens and Annesdale Park. I would not be comfortable taking Airways Blvd. after dark, but I am very security conscious. Areas adjacent to the airport are not very nice.

Mud Island is a terrific community, as is South Main, which would shave about 5 minutes off your commute. Both commutes would be driving on Interstates.

If you're #1 priority is "safe area" then I couldn't recommend midtown over a suburb. Especially if your wife is going to be home alone all day. The island is very safe, if you want to be in the city of Memphis. The drive from midtown to the airport (down Airways Blvd) is really ugly and you go through some pretty unsafe areas. The airport is easily accessed via I-240 from either direction (downtown or the suburbs).

Yea...my wife stays home all day, and even works in the yard! Crazy b@#$h! So you see some crappy places for, oh about 3 minutes down airways. I have a warehouse in the Memphis Depot. Nothing to worry about.

Memphis will be a culture shock. Smyrna is quite different. I saw some nice places off Park and Massey today. If you want fun, midtown or downtown. Midtown is a great place. But it is urban and like all urban areas just beaware of your surroundings and don't do anything stupid. I have left my Land Rover unlocked in Cooper Young for over a year. I am away in another part of the city and have left my house as is. No bars on the windows, just a few dogs. But don't be naive, anywhere, not just Memphis.

Not sure what the apartment/town home availability is like, but what about Southaven, MS (stay in desoto central's school district boundaries), or Hernando, MS......I make it to the airport in 20 flat.
