Anybody know if the commute would be difficult from Somerville to Millington? I am transferring to the Naval base but want to live in a rural environment.

It's a easy commute, but not short. You'd take Hwy 64 east to 385, then 385 to Millington. 385 is a lightly traveled outer perimeter freeway. The speed limit on 385 is 70mph, and on Highway 64 is 65mph - except through Oakland, where you MUST obey the speed limit! I'd guess Somerville to Millington is about 30 minutes....
If you lived a bit north of Sommerville, I-40 to 385 would be a option - and would avoid Oakland.

Thanks Joe, do you know much about Somerville, i.e., is it a good place to raise a family, good schools etc.?

I have a few friends who live near there - on acreage, not in town. They love it there. It's quiet, as you'd expect from a small town, but it's a short drive into the Wolfchase Galleria area if you get the itch to be around a bunch of people

I would consider southern Tipton County. Towns like Munford, Atoka, and Brighton. They're anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes from the Naval base depending on where you live. The area is pretty rural, but growing fast.

Thanks to both for the response. I have lived growing towns but would prefer to live in one that will stay small. I have Navy friends who live in Munford and Atoka, but honestly I would like to get away from the military when I go home. Somerville sounds to be the best option for us.

Have you looked at Covington?
Small town, less of a drive to Millington

Tipton county is going to stay rural longer than Fayette.
Covington is an okay town. Much shorter commute. I have a lot of family living there. Its a little high in crime, but its only burglaries and thefts for the most part, and as my family has lived there for years and years, they havent experienced anything except for a few trespassers. Very rural, and is staying that way, but its not stagnant- slowly growing as every place in the area. As for it being "gangsta", it does have a large black population ( bout 50-50 black to white), but this is still the country and racial tensions are less and crime is not as high as other areas. Drugs are there, but theyre also in the rest of the county even moreso.
Somerville doesnt have that great of schools, at all. But thats changing fast as the area is enveloped in Memphis' growth towards the east. The commute is 45-60 minutes to Millington. Im not seeing how somerville is going to "stay rural" no place in the Memphis metro is going to stay rural (unfortunately), except for Shelby forest where there are laws preventing growth. You may want to consider the Shelby forest area, now that I think of it...
I understand what you want in rural living, im just not seeing somerville fitting that bill as well as other areas.

I don't see much growth in Somerville. Most of the growth in Fayette County is in Oakland and Hickory Withe since they are much closer to Memphis.
