Default Moving to Memphis area

I am currently considering an offer at a local Memphis hospital. this would move our family from New Orleans. What are the best schools in the Germantown area and also would like information on youth sports.

Thanks, Jeff

Public-Germantown High & Houston High. Both very nice as well as their "feeder schools" both elementary & middle.
Private-A couple in the Memphis/Germantown area that are highly regarded are Evangelical Christian School & Christian Brothers High School.

Don't know much about youth sports in that area though, sorry.

* The public school system in Germantown is excellent.Nothing at all like Memphis City Schools.

I live in Jonesboro, AR (very close to Memphis) and relocated here last year having done extensive research on the area. I commute to Southaven, MS (just south of Memphis) for a few months a year to teach ice skating. Christian Brothers comes very highly recommended and so does the Episopalian High School. I think it is St. George.

As for youth sports, I do know that the Cordova, Germantown, and Collierville areas are just fanatical about their youth sports as is Jonesboro, Arkansas. If you want ice hockey or figure skating we're a bit poor in that area though we do try for the few months that we have ice. Memphis Youth Hockey is amazing and we at the Figure Skating Club of Memphis have accomplished some wonderful things. I notice that the parents here are really willing to go the extra mile for their children that are in these sports!

Since I live in Jonesboro, AR I have noticed it is a nice place (beautiful) to live and has about the same commute time into Memphis that deep Collierville does. We do have the # 1 rated school in Arkansas right here! We are a small city that is growing dramatically with wonderful restaurants, a beautiful new mall, fantastic youth sports and incredible family living.

The germantown area is so nice. I have lived in memphis all my life. I think Houston High is a great school. I also think that district is the best. The areas that you should look in that are really nice is COllierville, Germantown and Lakeland. Nice areas and you should have no problems with the schools. Hope this helps. THe sports are great in the germantown area too!

Isn't the only ice skating rink down in MS, at the DeSoto Civic Center (huge). I don't know of any local small ones ever since the Mall of Memphis closed years ago.

Memphis makes up for its lack of ice skating by offering a Memphis Artistic Club that focuses on roller skating dancing. Otherwise, you will only find ice related sports in DeSoto County, MS.

Sk8Mom, (Our club president also has Sk8mom as her name for her E-mail....) there are currently no public rinks in the Memphis area. It is not for the lack of trying on several fronts. There have been a few people who have started the process only to not proceed due to many different factors. It is heartbreaking.

Right now, I am in the middle of trying to build one here in Jonesboro. Things are looking up for us. Our brick campaign is really starting to take off, and we already have the land procured with really good highway visibility.

For the time being though we are all ice poor, with only the DeSoto center in Southaven, MS which is right outside of Memphis. It is a beautiful facility and has great ice, but it is only available on a limited basis. It is the home of the Memphis Riverkings, the FSC of Memphis (of which I am a member) and the many teams with Memphis Youth Hockey. All that combined with a limited amount of ice, makes for only about 2 hours a week for the figure skaters and I understand a little over an hour for each hockey team. The hockey players find themselves on long drives to Alabama to practice and hold try-outs. The figure skaters sometimes travel to Little Rock or to Nashville to find ice.

We all just need an ice rink!!!!

I have fond memories of going ice skating at the Mall of Memphis when I was young. "Skating" til we were black and blue, then going across the hall to eat at Wendy's or upstairs for Pancho's.

Good times.

I heard that a new rink will be part of the expansion at the First Tennessee Fields.
