Memphis ranks well ahead of those places in murder rate, violent crimes, STDs, etc. You simply cannot get around that.

Hey I'm one of the biggest complainers about Memphis, I've done my share. I did my homework before I moved here and chose to live over the border. So I have no vestment in promoting Memphis. I have no problems with people complaining about Memphis, actually I invite people to continue - it increases my property value on the other side of the border.

Memphis is it's own place but comparing it to other cities is fair game. That's the whole purpose, in a sense, to the city-data forum.

Memphis certainly sounds lovely. I can't imagine why anyone would consider living anywhere else in Tennessee.

That's right, Williboy. Clean it up before you get banned.

Fact is you can't ban all these people complaining about Memphis. There would be no posters left. Face it all, this city blows.

Then Leave, what is keeping you here. Don't tell me a job, because if Memphis is that bad, you would not stay just for that.

The purpose of this particular thread was to engage in some sort of intellectual discourse about Memphis. I had not intention of it becoming simply another thread that bashes the city. I understand that there are many aspects of the city that people do not like, and conversely there are aspects that people do. Memphis is not for everyone and I think it is best to allow people the space and opportunity to come to their own conclusions about the city. In order to do this, native Memphians, visitors, etc. need to see both sides of the story.

In terms of future posts, I urge everyone to offer more depth. I will begin. I like Memphis because I feel as if this is an exciting time to be in the city. Memphis is evolving and changing and looking at the development of the downtown area is an indication of this. Communities are being formed all over the place and there are steps being taken to facilitate true interactions among people. This is a small step, but change is gradual. Small winds.

Yes, you can follow chuck1229's example and move to Collierville!

It's laughable every time I see someone who lives in the white flight suburbs (or who lives in a gated or guarded neighborhood) defending Memphis. Hilarious.

This has to be one of the silliest statements I've read or heard. With the economy as it is, I'd say that a job is a darned good reason to live where one does. Sure, we're looking to move elsewhere, but we've got this funny little thing about liking food and shelter. Consequently, we have to have a job that goes with the move.

I guess that leads into my option. I have another job in another city, I've had a choice of three cities, one being Atlanta, one being near Boston. Company pays for relocation, cost of living increase, etc. I could move out tommorrow. I stay here by choice. Atlanta (lived there before)- no thanks I don't want to sit in traffic three hours a day. Boston - no thanks I don't want to spend half a million $'s for a small cottage and endure the taxes in "Taxachussets".

Caveat of course is I live over the border in MS. But the point is, I will take the bad of Memphis over other places...

However, on that same note, I also lived in East Tn near the mountains a few years ago. If I had an offer to move back there I would be moving tommorrow.

I wouldn't move to another city in a heartbeat. I'll move somewhere to a smaller town or a rural area, but I have no desire to live in a city - this one or any other.

Default Memphis VS Burbs

Laugh as you wish, but everyday I chat with my customers, most of which are out of the area, I talk from a Memphis standpoint, not Collierville or Shelby County. Very few people outside the area would even know about the burbs.

I think your comment on the "white flight" suburbs is a bit harsh, like that is the only reason anyone moves here. When I got my passport to move here from the north, my only decision was proximity to my office, and of course, what I could afford.

So don't pull that "white flight" out on too many people, because I believe it would not fit in most cases when someone is relocating from outside the area for work related reasons.
