It's been two years since release so I figure it's time to see if any rental stores are modernizing by now. I'm tired of buying my Blu-Ray & HD DVD movies then selling them on feeBay. Where can I rent Blu-Ray & HD DVD movies locally? I tried Blockbuster.com and they were incredibly slow, typically not mailing new releases until a month after actual release, so I canceled. I'm looking for somewhere in the U of M area.

Um, thanks, but Netflix doesn't even rent HD DVD movies. Besides, I'm looking for a "local" rental store within the relatively large city of Memphis that offers Blu-Ray & HD DVD movies. Or just Blu-Ray movies would suffice and I'll continue buying the HD DVDs as they are released if I must. So, are there simply no modern video rental stores within the 240 loop of Memphis? These high def formats have been out for 2 years, so I would have thought that we'd have at least a few video stores renting by now. If not, then when? 2010, 2012? If just one rental store began offering modern high-def formats then they would probably have a total monopoly here in Memphis, and it's redicoulsly low cost to add these movies to a store's existing stock. What gives?

Have you tried calling around to the various rental stores listed in the phone book?

Netflix does have Blu-Ray movies. The HD DVD format is being abandoned by Toshiba in favor of Blu-Ray.
See the press release below from Toshiba the developer of HD DVD. Toshiba : Press Releases 19 February, 2008 Edit: Video stores are gradually going out of business. They can't compete with Netflix and the other online services.
