Not being from there, all I had to rely on was forums, locals with my potential employer, and the news. All seem to agree that annexing and school rezoning has already started and who knows what the future holds. If you can afford private schools, then great. But we couldnt.

Hmmm, I wonder why school rezoning would bother you, interesting.

Dr Who--are you serious? Rezoning effects tax $$$, home values, schools, fire and police protection and quality of life. I guess if you aren't concerned about those things, it wouldn't bother you. The majority do care about quality of life issues, so rezoning is a major consideration.

However, he hasn’t lived there since high school so doesn’t know much about what it’s like now. He works for the family business which is headquartered in downtown Memphis so a move is inevitable. He is hoping for maybe a 30-40 minute commute to work at the most. So far I have been researching Eads, Arlington, Lakeland, Germantown, Collierville, and Cordova. His parents live in Eads so I’m not too keen on living too close to them if you get my drift. However, if it’s decent I guess I would. We are looking primarily for newer houses with spacious yards and near good public schools or good private schools. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have lived here for awhile and in my opinion, Germantown is a primo place to live. Very nice, very posh, and a tad too stuffy for me. But I know some people like that. Eads is nice, but a little more rural in some parts of it. Arlington, Lakeland, Collierville are nice areas. Cordova was once nice, but has gotten a little shady in the housing slump, too many houses were built and a lot of houses can't sell so they're sitting empty, forclosing, being rented out. Plus I think most of it is in City school district now.

Unfortunately, most public schools in the south aren't as good as schools in the north. It's been like that since public schools began. That being said, if you will be sending your children to public schools, make sure you stay in an area with a Shelby County School District. I cannot and will not recommend private schools, because my private school education in Memphis was crap and ridiculous, and a waste of money. I learned way more in public school than private school.

I really hope that helps and good luck on your eventual move. If you need a recommendation on a real estate agent, I have a good one for you.

You can't go wrong with Collierville, and the schools there are pretty much the best in the area. It has a nice balance between a small town feel and modern amenities (such as the new outdoor mall at Carriage Crossing). Most of the people there are transplants, and they work hard to make sure it doesn't have the problems that Memphis does.

Good luck with you move!
