Memphis Move in Near Future
I know we will be moving to Memphis at some point in the near future (maybe 1-2 years). We currently live in Vermont but my husband is a Tennessee native who grew up in Germantown, TN. However, he hasn’t lived there since high school so doesn’t know much about what it’s like now. He works for the family business which is headquartered in downtown Memphis so a move is inevitable. He is hoping for maybe a 30-40 minute commute to work at the most. So far I have been researching Eads, Arlington, Lakeland, Germantown, Collierville, and Cordova. His parents live in Eads so I’m not too keen on living too close to them if you get my drift. However, if it’s decent I guess I would. We are looking primarily for newer houses with spacious yards and near good public schools or good private schools. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

30-40 minute commute? How about something closer. Checkout the following exclusive areas before you decide on living outside of Memphis:
River Oaks - you'll probably favor this area the most, more new homes to choose from
Red Acres
Chickasaw Gardens
Central Gardens
Each of the above subdivisions offers relatively newer houses with spacious yards. It sounds like they will be within your budget too. Plenty of private schools to choose from and your hubby won’t have to drive 1.5 hours per day.

You can find plenty of good private schools everywhere. Public, however, is not an option in the city of Memphis. So that rules out Memphis and most of Cordova if you want public.
Like mentioned, you can find good homes with big yards everywhere. The school thing might need to be a primary concern for you.

Well, I don't know what Germantown was like when your hubby lived here, but I live here now and love it.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions
I will have to look into those places. I'm sure my husband would definitely prefer a shorter drive.

I would add the Millington area to the list.
Millington is growing, the schools are good, and I expect the property values there to go up.
And Millington still has a bit of the small town feel.
And it may be a bit closer to downtown than some of those other areas.
Also, it's farther from Eads than the other places on your list.

Please consider Bartlett, Tn. It is adjacent to Memphis but is incorporated as a separate city. We have a small town atmosphere and great schools. Not as pricey as Germantown but every bit as nice. The commute to downtown is about 20 minutes. We are selling and moving to Nashville only because I need a heart transplant at Vanderbilt. I think you would be shocked to see how much house you get for the money here. Mine is 3000 sq ft listed at $209,900, and its on a golf course. Listed with Rosemarie Yoon at Crye-Leike.

Please do more homework on this city. Then do more homework -- or just read WHY so many people are LEAVING...then ~reconsider~. Your husbands Germantown is NOT the same Germantown is was yeras ago. Just read the posts!. It's hard for people on this site to come up with many good points about this city. Government has severly let Memphis down. To the point were it's a dangerous and mostly an unfriendly city.
Sorry if the truth hurts.
IF YOU MUST COME ~ Arlington/ Lakeland are nice with new schools...country feel.
But, AGAIN, the Mayor is licking his chops trying to annex the whole freekin county for taxes!!
It's enough to make you sick. Just watch the news. That, unfortunately, is all I have to say
Best of luck !

Not that this annex will happen in the near future, or ever at all, but this was the main reason I chose not to relocate to Memphis area from VA. I visited the area, looked at about a dozen homes in Lakeland,Bartlett,Arlington and really liked what we saw. But the uncertainty of the school zone situation really turned us off. Not being from there, all I had to rely on was forums, locals with my potential employer, and the news. All seem to agree that annexing and school rezoning has already started and who knows what the future holds. If you can afford private schools, then great. But we couldnt.

I agree with those who mentioned private schools if that is an option. Also, as one person mentioned, definitely consider the town of Bartlett. I think it will have many on the things you are looking for and it still far enough from the in-laws and close enough to downtown. Welcome to Memphis!
