Bryton Towers
I've been searching the forum, but haven'ts seen anything about this complex. We have the opportunity to rent at a reasonable price, but, being from out-of-town, are unfamiliar with the area. Doing google search shows it is near enough to medical center for our purposes, but comments on this forum make us very concerned about areas in and around downtown. Can anyone help give us more information about this complex? Thanks for all the help you've given others, and that we've been also able to benefit from.

That's not a very good area; on Poplar west of Cleveland. Although it is near some good areas, right at that intersection it's pretty bad. Hard to explain...lots of bums, shady people wandering around 24 hours a day.
There are plenty, plenty of good homes/duplexes/apts for rent in midtown that are in very good areas, and within a couple miles of the medical center. The medical center itself is not the best area, so I would not want to live anywhere that was within walking distance.

the tough thing about Memphis is there aren't really good areas/bad areas....it changes quickly.
OK...I just googled it. I wouldn't rent there.

I had a friend who used to own a condo there. Had to take a large loss. It turned very bad very quickly, broken been bottles in the stairwells loud rap music 24-7.
It was a horrible place. This was several years back, and I haven't been inside since, but the neighborhood is the druggie/wino/prostitite type, and I would strongly doubt it had recovered.

Bryton Towers
Thanks for the quick responses. We'd heard the neighborhood was "in transition" and that it was part of the medical area redevelopment program, but all of that raised warning signs. We were torn between trying to get in on "the ground floor" of good deals, but safety is more important than money.
Thanks again

Poplar and Cleveland is not near the medical center...I don't see how it could be part of a redevelopment program for them. Some areas around it are being renovated or torn down and built back up, but those are several blocks from there back in residential areas.

My husband and I have owed in Bryton Towers for 3 years. We live here and are very pleased with the location, the Management, the other owners, the amenities and the appearance and upkeep of the building. I don't know who these people are who have responded to your message and request for information - but any resemblence to fact in their reports of prostitutes, druggies, vagrants, etc. is UNTRUE! Yes, we are in the Medical District, according to the Medical District Map. It is just such uninformed and incorrect information like those who posted in response to your request - that have tended to keep the value of these units down- and made your opportunity to rent, at a very low rate, possible. Most owners here wish we had fewer renters - and that is beginning to happen. We have electronic entry to the property and the building and security on premises. The stairwells are for emergency use only- and pristinely clean. Though we don't want more renters- I am very sorry you received false information.

Bryton Tower
I find it interesting that the moderator and those who do not know anything about Bryton Tower would respond and comment in a way that speaks of knowledge that is somewhat questionable. Bryton Tower is three blocks from Methodist University Hospital and three blocks from University of Tennessee campus, which is the reason that it is call the Medical Center.
Bryton Tower is a very nice place and it is in a transitional neighborhood, but I would make two challenges to those who seem to know so much about the area and the property; 1) Come visit and see what is going on, our prices are up and the property is continually improving. 2) Show me a neighborhood in Memphis that is not right next to a bad area, even Hein Park backs up to a very bad neighborhood.
Bryton is a very clean property and the owners have spent thousands of dollars to continue to improve it. As the moderator I would think that Pearlbob would make sure the information that is given by them was more correct. There are some problems in the area but check out our crime stitistics and you will find they are much worse in "good" neighborhoods. I am sorry rockydixie that you based your decision on these few comments but I am sure you will find a nice place for your son, but the investment value here cannot be beat.
I am the manager of the property and have been for 12 years and I do live on this property and I am very proud of the progress we have made as a property and if people in this city would stand up for our city more readily then all of our city would be better.
By the way I might be one of those you would call bums, prostitues or drug dealers you see walking the neighborhood because I and many of my resident walk this neighborhood and we have never had any problems. For those who are not urban/city dwellers it looks worse than it is and I understand that, but I do ask that especially the moderator be more informed on the information given. You may call me and come see Bryton Tower if you ever wish. 725-4607.

I drive by everyday, and I go by what I see outside the building. Other people have commented on direct experiences, and I highly doubt they are making up lies. I stand by what I said, moderator or not. I am a midtown resident and I can see things with my own eyes when I drive by.
I commented on the area and NOT the property, if you would like to go back and re-read my statements.

I did read your comments and if you were truly a concern Moderator you would know better, but I can see I hit a nerve. There was only one "experienced" person and he said his experience was years ago. I stand by what I said as well and I will bet our crime statistics are better than the those in your area and we do not even have a substation to back us. I am not sure why you want to knock our neighborhood and you have a right to your oppinion, I just believe it is wrong. Like I said I live in this building which is in this area and I do not think it is such a bad place.
