My husband and I just purchased a new home in Downtown near the farmer's market. Is the area safe? I really like to walk around with my dogs and don't want to worry too much. We are relocating from Los Angeles and don't really know anyone.

You purchased a home without first finding out if the area is safe? That was a huge risk in a dangerous city like Memphis.

The area is fine. South Bluffs (which is the only area there with "homes" per se) is an upscale neighborhood. The areas with all the condos are fine too, although definitely more industrial and not yet fully developed. I wouldn't walk out of the area at night, but as long as you stayed to the neighborhood, it should be fine. Going south it gets bad quick, as if you go east. But if you go north, you travel into the main area of downtown which should be fine and filled with people all the time.

^^It depends on perception of what dangerous it. You did not have a bad experience during your visit. However, if you live here long enough and watch the news that might change. I think Memphis is dangerous but other cities are too. Just like Miami. I visit often and have never had a problem. But if you ask some Miami residents they might have a different opinion. You just have to be cautious and mindful of your surroundings because crime can happen everywhere.
