I'm currently living in Madison, WI and I'm losing my mind. I've lived mostly in the South...Athens, GA, Mandeville, LA, but I'm looking for something a little different. Atlanta was way too big and spread out for my taste. I've been reading a lot about Midtown. Now I've seen all the stuff about crime and bums and whatnot and the street-to-street good/bad neighborhoods. But that sounds a lot like where I've always lived. I have no kids to worry about, and I'm used to that stuff myself. I'm not wealthy and have very little to attract thieves. Anyway, does Midtown sound like a good place for a fairly broke art school dropout to make a new start? I'd be renting. My current rent here in Madison is $650 and that includes heat (it being the frozen North, that's a good thing). But the apartment is extremely so-so, and not within walking distance of ANYTHING. Most rent here is higher, especially near downtown. What are the chances of finding a job for a smart, older, semi-educated person with no degree? I'm not looking for a $20 an hour career...just a nice $9 or $10 an hour job...bennies optional. So give it to me straight.

Might have a hard time finding a job where you didn't work with 20 year old high school drop outs, however midtown seems your style.

you'd probably be able to find a job in the $9 to $10/hour rate and if you want to be in walking distance to a lot of necessities, midtown would be it.

you don't hear of many people who dislike madison, but if the south is your style I can understand.

good luck.

$9 to $10 an hour is pretty doable. That's not unreasonable starting for someone without a degree.

There's jobs to be had. Depending on your area of art expertise you could find anything from t-shirt design to ad agency work. As for location, yes midtown or even Cooper Young would be fun. As for pricing, it's all over the place. Get here and check it out.

Well, it's not so much that the South is my style per se...it's just that I've never had such a hard time meeting new people as I have in Madison, and people can be really nasty sometimes but very passive-aggressive. Not that everyone is like that, but I've had my share of bad experiences, and I have to say it was never like that anywhere else I've lived. I'm a complete liberal but people love to "out-liberal" you here, and they can be extremely self-righteous. Maybe if I had more money, I'd fit in better...I don't know. I can't afford the required paraphernalia...the hybrid, the $1,000 bike, the expensive uber-comfortable, eco-friendly shoes. haha.

Isn't it funny? I lived in WI for 20 years and thought people were incredibly friendly. My husband took a job in 2006 in memphis and I have literally trolled for friends and we can't find any! LOL
