Default Fresh out of college,New job near airpport: where to live?

I'll be moving to Memphis asap & trying to find right mix for residence; reasonable commute to airport area, safe & other singles/activities nearby. Is Mud Island reasonable choice vs. Midtown vs. East Memphis?

Midtown would be a bit closer, definitely cheaper, and has more young singles. Mud Island is very nice and does have younger people, but it is removed from downtown - not walkable. It makes the island more isolated from "activities" that the rest of downtown has. It has a lot of young families. but, it's a great area if that is what you are looking for, and you'd prefer the type of environment it provides vs midtown.

East Memphis is generally residential with larger old homes with families. Not a single person's scene.

The Cooper-Young neighborhood would probably be the closest 'happening' neighborhood to the airport.

If you're looking for something different, there's a small historic neighborhood off Lamar called Glenview. In recent years, the neighborhood has had something of a renaissance largely due to the efforts of the Glenview Community Development Corporation. Unfortunately, the risk of property crime in Glenview is higher than in some other parts of Memphis.

Best wishes.

I appreciate your info. What about Colliersville? More of the family life? Parents are more familiar w/that area. I'm still confused about Midtown areas; am I correct to say some are safer than others & how to know if new to area?

Collierville is a very wealthy family suburb relatively far from anything I would consider to be nightlife. If you are 40 and have kids and a dog, then it might be right for you

Yes, there are million dollar home and crackhouses in midtown. It's pretty impossible to know what you are getting into without coming here and seeing it for yourself. You'd need a specific address of where you want to live in order to get feedback on here. It's pretty impossible to give a generalization.

Collierville, while nice, would be a pretty big commute to the airport area. If you can find a place close to I-240 or the 385, then it would help some. Downtown is great, midtown would work fine.

Mud Island definitely.

Cooper-Young is overrated in my opinion. Really there is nothing to do there. Unless you like to shop often for drums, cats or lesbian literature.

There's a handful of restaurants/bars. But the area has picked up in burglaries and robberies in the past year.

Collierville is any suburb, usa. And it would be quite a drive. From Mud Island, you are very close to downtown (you can walk actually, though its a mile or two depending on what part of the island you're on), and very close to interstate ramps.

Plus on Mud Island, if you dont read the paper or watch the news, you can almost forget you're even in Memphis.

I live on the island and being young and single I find it far removed from all the fun. I do like it-its peaceful and very calming. I truly appreciate it after a stressful work day. Nice to walk and jog and Miss Cordelias has a nice deli. However, I prefer the hustle and bustle of downtown proper. Its just a matter of preference. I have lived in the downtown proper and literally never drove on the weekends. The trolley was very close and I could almost hop to a Red Birds game. Good luck whatever decision you make and welcome to Memphis.
