I currently live in an apartment in Southaven because I work in the airport area. Very easy drive. However, Southaven is becoming an extension of Whitehaven.

Arlington is a bit too far as the gas price gets worst everyday. I just don't know where should I live.

Please help.

Just curious because I'm thinking about Southaven. What do you mean an extension of Whitehaven?

Whitehaven is a very bad part of town. From the sound of it he's saying that it's spreading south.

ComputerMan got it right. A guy at work even called Southaven the new "Blackhaven".

To the OP: you want us to name a place, anywhere in the area, for you to live? No price range, no ammenities you want?

I have two kids, 3 & 4, both have ADHD. School is important for re-sell I think. Can't afford anything more than $200k, and the cost of gas is already killing me.

Thanks

I own a home in Olive Branch and am seriously concerned about what is happening in Southhaven. Horn Lake, just to the west of Southhaven has long been a bad place - not as bad as some places in Memphis to be sure but bad.

I don't think that the crime problems are extending south. Crime problems don't move - criminals do. What should concern you is whether or not the area that you are considering is committed to keeping crime out. If they are then it's likely that the area will remain safe until that changes. In Olive Branch the police are very tough and vigilant. I like it that way.
Still, I'm concerned.

Well, your criteria narrows that down immensely I was thinking you were a 20-something year old single guy. Shows how incorrect impressions can be when not enough detail is given

$200k for a home in a safe area near the airport isn't enough. If you want schools, you want to in Germantown, Collierville, but $200k isn't enough for a 3 bedroom home there. Is there a way for you to move to a different area of Southaven, further....west, south?....so you'll still be in their school district but you don't have to worry about moving to a new city?

Can you get your co-worker to please explain why we have this nickname? Yes, there are parts of town that are not the best. Highway 51 near Whitehaven has always been a bad area. I know a few Southaven police officers that have some interesting stories from that area dating back to the early 90's.

My nighborhood near Church and Getwell couldn't be any more different. The residents range from young couples with kids to retirees. We have white, black, Asian, hispanic and Indian families all living together. It's not perfect. There has been 1 break-in in the 6 years I have been here but the consensus is that it was teenagers looking for money and they had been in the house before (invited in). And one house has had a visit from the police about a loud, late night pool party.

Yes, crime will go up as Desoto county grows but the police are doing what they can. After the Southaven mall was built, that shopping district became its own precinct. Not only are there patrol cars, there are cops on bicycles as well as plain clothes police in the area.

Read the web version of the the Desoto County Tribune crime report - link (http://www.dctribune.com/articles/2008/07/02/news/00news02.txt - broken link). I'm sure the Southaven version is similar (if I could find an online one).
