hey. need a little local advice. i am going to be in memphis dec. 5-7 for the st. jude marathon. im checking out downtown hotels, and would be grateful for any opinions as where (or where not) to stay. was looking at the crown plaza, marriot, and springhill suites. does anyone know anything that might work better? i want to be within 1 mile of the start/finish. also want something safe and reasonably priced. thanks.

Any of the downtown hotels are fine I'm sure will be filled with runners. The Marriott and Crown Plaza are further removed, so it would be a farther walk to downtown. The rest are all within about a 5 block radius. Any are within a mile. I would suggest the Residence Inn by Marriott.

You can look at the forum on tripadvisor.com for questions like this. You'll find tons of answers on there regarding hotels.

And a BIG welcome to Memphis from another runner. I hope to make that particular marathon my first. I won't win, I won't come in the middle. My goal is to finish the race on the same day that I start it.

If you wind up at the rear and you see a big ole fella with steel gray hair and a gray Van Dyke wave hi to me. I'll give you one of my spare smiles - I always keep an extra few for visitors to our fair city.

I've stayed at the Gen X on Madison just off of I240 and had a good experience. Reasonably priced depends on your budget. Room was about $125/night in the summer tourist season. Not including taxes.

Best wishes on your run.

This is the 240/40 split near downtown. St Judes is nearby. NOt the 240/40 split in east Memphis.

I have heard good things about Gen X, but keep in mind you'd still need a car or cab to get downtown to the marathon site. There is a trolley, but it isn't reliable and wouldn't be running that early on a Saturday morning. It would not be walkable to downtown, especially if you are walking there and then proceeding to run 26 miles

thanks guys. got a room at the benchmark hotel for the weekend. don't think that it is a really nice hotel, but the proximity to the start/finish line could not be beat.
