Default Black Lizards

Can anyone tell me what the the little black/white striped lizards are? They look like lizards, but have a snubbed tail and head - sort of hard to tell if they're coming or going. They're really shiny black. Are they harmful? The one that's hanging around on my patio doesn't appear to move too quickly, runs when I go out the gate, but comes right back into plain sight.

Although not a native of Memphis yet I can tell you that the lizards are of no harm. If you are superstitious then lizards are a sign of coming wealth.

Sounds like it might be a type of salamander maybe? Do you have any water or always dampness around? If so it could be.

Those are almost certainly coal skinks. And as mbmouse said, all TN lizards are 100% harmless.
