First of all you shouldn't get on here and talk about a City in which you don't know what you're talking about. I know Lakeland, inside and out. Lakeland is a gorgeous community that yes has no City taxes at the moment (and won't in the near future). There is no Lakeland High School, but there is a Arlington High School which is very nice. Lakeland has had some gang activity but no suburb of the Memphis Metro area doesn't including Oakland. The activity consist of grafitti, most likely attributed to middle school and high school students who are left to do as they please by their parents. I assure you that this is well under control by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.
Lakeland is, has, and will be the jewel of Shelby County. The City has a wonderful Mayor as well as equally educated and objective board members comprised of citizens of Lakeland. The citizens enjoy a unique setting, to the West Tennessee area, of Natural Resources and has been considered one of the most progressive Cities in the entire state due to the protection of those resources. The urban sprawl throughout the county at one point in time threatend to overun the City. That was until an inspired group of citizens and staff members made a stand to preserve the City's natural heritage. Since then, the City has been aknowledged for their efforts by the state and federal governments by the awarding of grants to the City to further their efforts. Unfortunately, this is not the status quo for the area. Memphis does have it's full share of crime and gang activity. With that said the Memphis police department and Shelby County Sheriff's Department has quality leadership and do very well to be proactive in the community to minimize crime. The unfortunate problem is that citizens feel that for some reason, they shouldn't cooperate with the authorites in the majority of cases. It's like the old saying, if there's no witness there's no crime. Now for the good. Memphis is the cultural epicenter of the enitre mid-south area. The music and history of is unparalelled in the country. The cultural cuisine is top-notch. Where else have you heard of a buisness having armed escort for frying grease, to be relocated. There is no better place for bar-b-que, period. The St. Louis Cardinals triple a team, the Memphis Redbirds, have a wonderful stadium located in the heart of downtown. Midtown Memphis is main area in the mid-south as well for artistic expression and exhibit as seen in the Cooper-Young district, Brooks Museum, and Dixon Art Gallery and Memphis Botanic Gardens. See, I've lived in the NE, SE in 5 different places, the Midwest, the plains, and the Southwest. I have lived in town for just over 14 years now. And am proud to finally be able to have a place to call home. Nowhere's perfect, bu there are truly great places in this country that the educated don't mind staying in or returning to to make better for all not just their selfish selves to live off of and exploit. If you have any further question about the Lakeland area, ask Lakeland residents by searching their City's webpage or by searching blog's and civic websites. Or just ask me by posting on this site. |

Well, speaking only for myself, I spend time here in the Memphis forum. I currently live in the Jacksonville, FL, area, but I consider the Memphis area to be my home. I grew up there, graduated from high school there, and my folks still live there. That's why I like coming here to this forum. It's like a reminder of home.
As for the "sock puppets" who are from FL and take on multiple personalities, to heck with 'em! ![]() |

I live right near it off Davies Plantation, When I moved here from CA I lived in the StoneBridge apts, also Lakeland. My kids go to Lakeland Elementary and Arlington middle....the subdivision I bought a home in is AWESOME... We have 3 kids and have no issues letting them play in the neighborhoods. The apts have gone downhill since Katrina, but the problems are nothing out of control, and the Sheriffs dept has a good handle on them. The schools are great, and we are very happy here |

I live in Oakland and I was afraid of the school system as many others are. My son is in K and we all just love it. It has small class size ( 16 in his class), the curriculum is great, and his teacher is to die for. It is just perfect. Also, the demographics of the school is such that not everyone is just like you. It makes for a sweet "real life" environment. So, if you are considering a move to Oakland, the education isn't what it seems. You shouldn't go by "test scores" alone to judge a school. Not sure if this helps. Just my 2 cents!

I've previously stated that I am returning to Memphis in the near future. I lived there before, for 3 years, and am sorry I left when I did. I'm from Orlando but now living in the Jax area. I was in Orlando before Mickey Mouse and remember it when it was a Southern city. Now it's just another borough of New York. I left due to the overcrowding, the traffic, the rising cost of living, and I just wasn't ready to learn another 4 languages just to be able to communicate in any area---and I already speak 4 languages! Jacksonville was the murder capital of Florida in 2006 and 2007. All this means is that people live where they choose to due to their own personal situations, read: work, likes, dislikes, income, climate, attractions, you name it. For me, Florida is becoming way too crowded. 1000 people per week move here. By 2020 there will be 11 million more people here. That impacts everything from the grocery store to health care. I'm too old for all that. Besides, the homes that I've picked out to look at/buy are all in Midtown and are 100-150 thousand cheaper than anywhere in Jax plus the taxes are phenomenally cheaper. You don't like Memphis? Leave. You want/like Florida, Go. That's what makes this country so damn great---freedom of choice.
