how's the area on the west of the highland street? let's say within one block. Is there a big difference compared with the ones on the east of highland street?

What part of Highland? The answer depends heavily on the intersection you are talking about.

Actually, it probably does not matter - safety depends on how far north or south on Highland you are talking about. Not so much a block west or east.

Is it north of Highland? The Northwood, Century, Prescott section there seems to be pretty good (I have a good friend who lives there), but once you go west to Holmes or beyond it's not a good area - so you're only a couple of blocks from there. The only trouble my friend has had is a couple of stolen lawnmowers, but his back yard backs up to a drainage ditch that the thieves can use to get to that area from the Tillman/Johnson area.

The couple of streets (Century and Reese?) between Highland and Holmes and between Walnut Grove and Poplar seem to be OK as well

Walnut Grove and Highland is fine. The further west you go, it gets bad. But one block west of Highland at Walnut Grove is a good area. Old established homes. Just be wary of petty crime like car break ins and use common sense (don't leave things in your yard overnight, don't park your car in the street if you leave something in it).

However, Holmes is not a block away. I had a friend who bought a home when they moved to Memphis on Holmes, south of Walnut Grove a couple blocks, and they regretted it. They were only here temporarily though, so they bit the bullet and stayed. They really felt unsafe in the area.

I know Holmes is close to Highland, but a few blocks really does make a big difference. At Holmes, there are tons of boarded up houses behind East High School...bad area.

I live on Palisade...four blocks west of Highland between Poplar and Central. The neighborhood is named Joffre, and we LOVE it. The neighbors are great, and I feel completely safe when I walk my dogs at 2 or 3 in the morning. Great area!

Are you looking at that house on the corner of Northwood and Walnut Grove?
