Default Apartment advice for Memphis

I have a new job opportunity that would relocate me to the Memphis Area! The company is located around route 78 (Lamar Ave) and 175 (E Shelby Dr) and i need to find a nice place to live!
Ideally, I would prefer a commute less than 30 mins, but my first priority is finding a SAFE area (I don't want my car stolen/broken into!) I am a 25 yo female, (no kids) and i'm looking for a 2 bedroom apartment with rent around 1,000/month to share with a roommate. School districts are irrelevant of course, but i'm not too much of a party girl, either.

Can I get some suggestions? I appreciate any advice you have!!!

Hmmm.

Well, I can tell you that you probably don't want to live anywhere near your workplace.

If you like traditional urban life, you might try some of the great Midtown neighborhoods. If you're more into the quiet suburban lifestyle, you might look at some of the areas in North Mississippi.

Thanks for the advice. Honestly, I'm looking for somewhere in between. I'm used to urban life, but i've heard so many people on this forum say that Memphis is unsafe to walk around / unsafe to park your car... its a little disconcerting. I searched apartment ratings in the area and i found a few that didn't have a majority of negative reviews... I haven't looked in midtown yet though. How is the parking there?

Here are some of the things i'm considering:

Park Estate Apartments
960 Catbird Court
Memphis, TN 38119

Monticello Apartments
3250 Kirby Pkwy
Memphis, TN 38115

Hunters Trace Apartments
1730 Hunters Trace Dr
Memphis, TN 38120

While I don't know anything specifically about Hunters Trace Apartments, I do know their location and can tell you that it's a safe area and close to tons of shops/grocery stores/restaurants etc. I used to live at Kirby Station apartments which is pretty much next door to Hunters Trace. You may want to check those out too.

A good friend of mine lived in Hunters Trace for a couple of years. She liked it, but her apartment was incredibly small. (I'm not sure if all the apartments there are small, or if she just got the cheapest model.)

Park Estates, iirc, is good. I don't know anything about the other place you mentioned.

Midtown is, imo, a good place to live. There are some neighborhoods that are sketchy. However, if you can find a place in Cooper-Young or Central Gardens or near Overton Park (my preferred neighborhood), you just might like it. Here's the thing: Many folks who own subdivided houses in Midtown do not advertise their openings in the newspaper or on the internet. They simply put signs out. You have to drive through the neighborhoods and look for them. (That should, imo, say something positive about the demand and desirability of these neighborhoods.)

Best wishes.

How did you like Kirby Station? I checked out apartmentratings.com and not a lot of people had very nice things to say about it. When did you live there and how was management/maintenence?

PS: I got a verbal offer today which i accepted, so I'll be out there in just a couple of weeks! Is it time to freak out yet???

I liked it just fine. I was in one of the newly-renovated apartments and it was really nice. The management could be pretty flaky but I hardly ever dealt with them so it was never an issue. I only had a few interactions with the maintenance people but my overall impression was that they were idiots. Fortunately there were very few issues so that didn't really effect me. On the positive side, they do keep the grounds/landscaping extremely nice and well-kept. I always appreciated how pretty everything looked- especially in the spring. Most importantly, I always felt safe. As a 24-year-old female living alone, that was very important!

Working around 78 & Shelby Drive you'd probably find the closest safe area would be Olive Branch MS - but I have no idea at all what the apartment situation is there...

We just went through the nightmare of finding an apartment for my daughter who is beginning to work on her doctorate in Memphis. I didn't like some of the things I read online about larger apartment complexes-Wolfechase, etc- and we asked questions to complex residents while visiting as well. We could not find an appropriate apartment in the "safe" areas of Midtown, so she ended up renting a condo in Chatham Village. It is gated with video camaras and has worked out well for her.
Best wishes!
