Default Thanks -

Thanks for the info. It sounds like Midtown is a great place to focus our home search.

I would personally not suggest Midtown if you have a 4yo. The city schools are HORRIBLE! Germantown elementary and highschools are very nice. I can't say that about Middle and Junior Highs there. Briarcrest (if you can afford it) is a great school.

I hear it's better in only the OPTIONAL program. I bet it is one of the better schools run by the city to go to. I would still say Germantown, Mississippi, and Private Schools.

White Station Elementary doesn't have an optional program; it's only the high school that does.

White Station Middle also has optional. Grahamwood elementary and Richland are the two main feeder schools to WSMS, with Grahamwood having an "enriched academics" optional program. Richland is true MCS rarity, an excellent high performing elementary school, although I don't remember if there is an optional program there.

Hi mjane, sorry to be late responding to your inquiry about meeting people, but I haven't gotten in the habit of checking this web site. I have made my best friends here through the preschool my kids attended (evergreen presbyterian playschool), working on PTA projects at Snowden, my church (First Presbyterian in downtown Memphis) and through cub scouts (at Trinity Methodist). When my kids were really little I met neighbors by wandering up and down my street looking pitfully in need of a grown up to talk to and that worked for me.

There is a weekly e-newsletter that goes out to Evergreeners which lists everything from houses for rent to upcoming social events and requests for volunteers. This weekend Evergreeners went Xmas caroling together to a nearby residence for elderly and to some shut in folks in neighborhood. Many neighbors volunteered at our "station" giving out water and screaming support for the St. Jude marathon runners. Sometime in Nov there is always a free party in the park with hayride and som'ores for kids. I work out at a nearby Curves, where I have met a lot of interesting women also.

Midtown feels like a little town in the middle of a big city. There is hardly ever traffic problems here. Sadly the Whole Foods and the Target are about a 15 minutes drive away, that is as far as I ever go.

Wishing you luck with your move. kcbundy

John P Freeman in Whitehaven has the highest TCAP in MCS and Shelby County. And yes it is a MCS schools. It is unfair to paint all MCS with the same brush.

It's unfair how all of MCS gets a bad rap. People usually only mention White Station as a good school. But there are other good schools like Overton & Central. I know many well educated individuals who just graduated from those schools. I think they those schools get overlooked because they're almost all black so people automatically assume that they bad schools. People also assume that Shelby County schools are all great. I graduated from Millington and it wasn't all that great. Freshman year we started out with 500, by the time graduation came we only had 200.
