Ah, I see. Makes sense now.

Actually, for a second, I thought the "troll" in question was me, since I currently live in FL (though am a dyed-in-the-wool Memphian). I was like "Whoa, when did I become a troll?"

Well, thank you all again. Actually, my husband's company would pay for moving, realtor, closing fees. So we have that going for us. Also, to reiterate, we may stay longer than three years....but if we were to get transferred for another position, it could be as short as that. We may not, though.

What I'm really trying to get at here is a feel for the neighborhoods, where you can get more house for your money, where there is newer construction, where there are decent neighborhood/community amenities (such as pools, parks, shopping, restaurants, entertainment, etc., if any) and where the good school districts are.

Do neighbors get together with eachother in general? E.g., are there bunko groups, book clubs, etc? This is just a general question as I'm aware you can't speak on behalf of everyone....but what are people's experiences with their neighbors in the areas of question?

Thanks again!

I'm sure it's different everywhere. I don't know my neighbors that well. I know who they are, but we don't hang out. Not much in common

New construction is going to be in the suburbs. Parks are all over, including Shelby Farms, the largest inner city park in the country. For "entertainment" you'd want to stay downtown or in midtown, although I'm not sure what you mean by that. Shopping is mainly in the suburbs for big malls, but in the city for boutiques (and in suburbs). Cville has a huge outdoor mall. Gtown has a lot of expensive boutiques. Cville is a relatively "new" city compared to Gtown (although both have been around a long time, it's only been recently that Cville became a suburb with people living there and commuting all over the area).

Good school districts are outside of Memphis. Period. Gtown and Cville are probably the best as of right now.

As a realtor who specializes in the county, I am familiar with all of the areas that the OP has mentioned. I work with many famililies that transfer in to the area that do not "get the appeal" of G'town or Collierville. You will get more house for the money in the communities of Arlington or Lakeland, new construction and all of that. Arlington seems to be the hotspot for tranferees. However when you go to sell, the appealing factors will also be your negative if you go to sell in the near future. You will competing with this same New contruction. Your company may work with a relocation company and this may not be an issue for you. You are further from ammenities in this community then any other you are considering, with the exception of Oakland. I personally live in a home in Germantown with a market value of around 300k. I live in a 40 year old home that is outdated by current construction standard. I choose to live here because of its proximity to shopping, the security of property values, sense of community, and safety. It is true that Germantown neighbors some less desirable areas in Memphis. ie Hickory Hill. It also neighbors the most affluent part of Memphis. ie East Mempis. These facts make some parts of Germantown more desirable then others. The moms here get together to play bunko every week, and meet at the school everday (1 hour early) to pick up their children. So a very strong sense of communtiy here.
There is some new construction going on in Collierville that may have the ammenities that you are looking for, but these new neighborhoods will not have the sense of community of the more established ones. I will be hapy to mail you a relocation package outlining many of the Townships that you are considering. this may give you a better feel for which communities best "fit" the needs of your family. I understand what you are looking for in your new move, but need you to prioritize those needs to better help you with your choice.

Again, I think what you are looking for can be found in Arlington which is a Memphis suburb. (far enough away from the crime) The town in itself has family/community activities throughout the year. The homes on the east side of Hwy 205 (aka-Airline Rd)are newer homes with new construction still in progress in this ever growing town. There are a few general stores, a grocery store, and several small businesses/boutique type stores. Our neighborhood/subdivision (Ewing Place) has block parties, the kids all play together. The schools are great with Elementary/Middle/and HS in town. The Mall is a 10 minute shuttle off of the interstate where there are more restaurants/movies/stores/home improvement etc.

Collierville is also another nice community. It is a little older but established enough to have many shopping choices. I don't know specifically about how the neighbors interact, but know this community also houses local schools with K-12. The homes are a little older and I am not so sure where there would be "new" construction out there without having to live on the outskirts of the town.

Both towns are seperate from Memphis but do carry a seperate tax in addition to the county tax. Arlington's is fairly cheap considering the amenities available and when comparing to some of the other towns within the suburbs

Hope this helps.

If your family work in UTHSC, do not choose Millington. Consider Cordova for middle family budget.

Just a note here - you may be from the northeast, etc. where 3BR, 2BTH houses go for that and more. But this is the mid south. You don't need to spend $350k to $400k on a house. You can, depending on the neighborhhod and size, but you don't have to.

A very comfortable 2,100 square foot house can easily be obtained for $200k or less. Learn what your money can buy here, and don't artificially drive up our values unless your intention is to buy a mini-mansion. We never joined the outrageously overpriced and appreciating (and then depreciating) property value bandwagon down here.

We have all of that in some Collierville neighborhoods
My subdivision has 3 bunkos, a book club, Bible study, tennis league, pool and tennis courts.

I would look at mud island (relatively close to Spain airport), but this all depends on what else your looking for.
