Default Moving To Memphis

I'm moving to Memphis and will work at St. Jude. I want to live someplace close to work. I think I may want to buy a small house. I saw some houses behind St. Jude that looked like new construction does anyone have any info on these? Would that be a good place to live?

How expensive are the houses on Mud Island? Any other neighborhood that someone could suggest that is close would be appreciated.

You don't want anything in the area near St. Jude. That new constrution will be in disrepair in about 5 years. Mud Island starts in the $300's. You may want to think about Millington. It's a straight shot down Hwy 51.

There are some beautiful small homes in some historic neighborhoods in Midtown that would be more affordable than Mud Island: Central Gardens, Evergreen, Vollintine. Central Gardens is probably the safest since there's a police station next door on Union Avenue. Evergreen is next to Overton Park, kind of the Memphis version of Central Park (it's where the zoo is located). And to get from Evergreen to St Jude is a breeze, a straight shot down North Parkway.

The neighborhood around Overton Square also has some small homes, same with Cooper-Young. Those very walkable neighborhoods are also a little more "hip" and have a mix of young urban professionals, college students, artists, but also the occasional crack house.

No, the homes near SJ are not good. They may be new, but they are mainly for low income familes.

Mud Island does have some homes for around $200,000 but they probably sell within an hour of being listed. And they are small. Downtown is mainly condos, if you would be interested in that, but expensive condos.

There are tons of great homes in Midtown, for all price ranges. Central Gardens, Cooper Young, Overton, Evergreen, Idlewild, etc.

FYI the police station on Union is moving to Lamar soon.

A lot of people who work at SJ live on the island or in midtown. However, a lot also live in the burbs and drive 30+ min to and from work each day. It really depends on how "city" you are, and what type of home/neighborhood you are looking for. Do you have kids? Dogs? Do you want a yard? Grocery store nearby? etc.

The drive from Collierville to the Jude would be about 45+ min in the morning, and 45+ after work. Same with Germantown, maybe even more to Gtown since there is no direct interstate into that area. And with the Walnut Grove/I-240 construction that will be going on until 2008....yipes. I wouldn't recommend that to be your first home-work situation in Memphis.
