I've never been in a Hueys where the tables and floor were slimy (at least not any more than most bar and grill establisments). It isn't a high class establishment, but I think the food is very good for the prices and the service is usually top notch. I guess it's all about expectations, but I've never left a Hueys thinking I didn't get what I paid for. The toothpicks in the ceiling and graffitti on the the walls is part of the charm of the place to me. Plus it is great fun watching a newby try to stick a toothpick into the ceiling.

I agree with UofMGrad92 100%. My wife and her office mates frequent the Huey's downtown for lunch. I'm a weekly visitor to Huey's in Southaven for lunch. Not only is the food good, the entire staff is great. I'm installing a stereo for the manager. My wife and I have been invited to a baby shower for one of the servers. They are a bunch of nice people that really take pride in what they do.
Other local places we go to are Half-Shell (same owners as Huey's), La Hacienda (in Southaven but there is one in G-town). We also make our way down to the Paula Dean buffet at Harrah's sometimes. If you go down there make sure you ask for Miss Ora as your server. She is the best.

To me Huey's is overrated, but to each his or her own.
El Porton, I love to hate it. It's okay, maybe we'll try La Hacienda.
Perkins is good, Belmont Grill too, though service has been a bit slow.
What is Gibson's?

I'm guessing smtchll is talking about the same Gibsons I am?
Little mom and pop doughnut place on Mendenhall near Poplar. They stay open pretty late and it's kind of a hangout spot for some of the younger crowd in the wee hours. Sort of like Howards doughnuts on Summer is a hangout for some of the older crowd on weekday mornings.

I think I saw it mentioned in this thread, but Salsa (Poplar@Ridgeway in the shopping center next to Embassy Suites) is really good. It is somewhere between an authentic Tex Mex place (El Mezcal) and a more Americanized version of Tex Mex (Abuelos). I also like Abuelos (Hwy 64 near Wolfchase), but the food isn't spicy enough for my liking.
The Happy Mexican downtown (Second (I think) south of Beale) is also good. I like Rio Loco on Union better, but if you are downtown and want Mexican food either one is tasty. Parking is definitely easier at the Happy Mexican.
