day trip to memphis
My wife and myself are going to spend the day in Memphis. I can be there by 10am, we have been to graceland and do not want to go back. I was thinking of sun records, and the pink palace, and maybe stax records, and beals st. Any other ideas of things to see?

go to the forum on tripadvisor.com. You will get plenty of ideas from other tourists on that forum.
Sun has set times for tours, you cannot walk in and look around. Maybe 3 or 4 times a day. Also Rock & Soul Museum is great, the Civil Rights Museum is top notch.

After seeing the places you mentioned, there will not be a lot of time left, but I'd try the Zoo in Overton Park, Brooks Museum of Art also in Overton Park and this too - Dixon Gallery and Gardens - Home.
And here's another idea - http://www.metalmuseum.org/

That is utter nonsense. Memphis may have more crime than most big cities, but it's not a war zone. It's still a fun city with some beautiful neighborhoods. Take regular precautions (keep valuables out of sight, lock your doors, don't venture into ghetto neighborhoods, etc.) but there's no need to get hysterical.

i agree w/ some of this post. i would say, if you own a weapon, bring it w/ you. you might need it to protect yourself in nashville, which---not to take anything from pkt's original suggestion---is the "somewhere else" city that i would recommend you go. consider yourself warned, however. stay out of the crime-ridden areas and you'll probably be fine. places like hermitage (see posts about this area in other threads on CD), east nashville, north nashville, and parts of west nashville and south nashville.
crime is not just confined to a few areas in nashville.
nashville, which has earned a ranking of the 7th most violent city in the nation (on a scale of 1 to 10), can be "dicey." the use of discretion will most likely produce a favorable safety outcome for you. many of the neighborhoods are fine; however, they often back questionable and seedy neighborhoods, where one might likely encounter problems relating to safety. this is not always the case, but it is a good rule of thumb when visiting nashville or other towns in the area. one can never be overly cautious, when assessing issues of personal safety.
to minimize carjacking and vandalism while visiting nashville, you might consider some of the anti-theft products sold at local auto retail outlets. the club, steering wheel-lock devices, lock covers for hub caps and anti-theft locks for tires, anti-theft locks for gascaps---there are a myriad selection of products, to name a few. you might even be better off to arrive in an updated abrahms tank, for some consider the area to be similar to baghdad---that is a bit far reaching, imo. and, as pkt so astutely points out, do not leave items in plain sight in your car, regardless of the area; to do so gives an open invitation to the thugs and robbers, who are found throughout america---urban and rural. please hide your banjo, guitar, overalls, straw hat, and snuff, 'cause the nashville thugs are on the prowl! be safe and use common sense ya'll, and have a good time.

This thread is about visiting Memphis, not Nashville. Why did you turn it into yet another one of your rambling anti-Nashville rants?
But since you did, let's get a few things straight. Using the most recent FBI stats (2008) Memphis is still far more dangerous than Nashville. In 2008 Nashville had 817 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Memphis had 1,218 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. That's 50% more than in Nashville. And "violent crimes" includes murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
(Side note: the most dangerous city was Detroit which has 1,220 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, just a negligible difference from Memphis.)
We can thank the Memphis Commercial Appeal for this information:

perhaps the sports team came by its name honestly. there is truth in a name, i've always heard. anyway, please, for those of you who follow the saga, mirror jmt's fine example and take his sagely advice, so as not to become hysterical. it certainly seems as if he knows how to remain steady in a self-imposed crisis. thank you for sharing, jmt. rap music to you! you little "gatekeeper, you."
