Moving to Memphis Aug09
What Mobile Phone company would you recommend based on cost vs quality?
What Yellow page directory is most used/prevalent in Memphis?
Will be looking to set up a private practice as a psychotherapist... any suggestions re: office locations? Are there a lot of counselors/marriage and family therapists in Memphis phone books?
We are looking at spending between 150 and 200k for a new home. On Zillow I see a lot of foreclosure activity. Can anyone describe the current housing market and give suggestions or cautions?
If you could tell me one thing you love about Memphis and one thing you dislike, what would they be?
Hey thanks for your help. Peace to all.

I just answered some of these questions on another post...it must have been you! Look at that post for some answers about the cell company and jobs.
For your price range, Cordova and Bartlett suburbs would be good for you. Are you wanting to live in the surburbs?
Dislike: Lots of crime and the terrible education of a majority of the residents (those 2 go hand in hand)
Like: there is a lot to do here. So much good food, tons to do for families and couples, places to hang out, parks, museums, restaurants, sports teams....

[/quote]AT&T is in Memphis, and is probably the best nation-wide company. From what I hear from others, their prices are very good, good service, and good options.
I haven't seen a paper yellow pages in a long time But you can look online in the yellow pages and see what's in there. As I'm sure you know, Master's level therapists aren't as highly needed in larger cities, since we also have a huge medical center here with tons of psychiatrists and PhD psychologists. I think in Memphis, most MA level therapists are more alcohol-and-drug, social work type people. Of course, that would leave lots of room for you!
Housing locations...you have to give a lot more info on what you are looking for before we can give suggestions. Kids? House/condo? Suburbs? Schools? Price range?

Thanks for the Info Bob. I never considered the idea of there being a lot of Psych professionals in the PhD and MD range in Memphis. I live in central Nebraska where there are a few psychologists and VERY few Psychiatrists.
I will look at the online pages for therapists. I have had a lot of luck out here with the local yellow page BOOK and get a lot of referrals from that source. I was thinking of putting in an ad there as soon as possible.
We had seen the crime stats but hoped that some neighborhoods would be safer than others. That's going to be the most helpful info I am guessing. Appreicate your opinions about that.
Where I live folks don't lock their houses or their cars and crime rate is relatively low. I've often called this place "The Shire" but never realized how darn close that description really is!

Yellowbook is in Memphis. But I thought anything that was in the paper phonebook is automatically also on the online phonebook. I could be wrong!
Oh yes, there are tons of great, safe places to live here. Just depends on what you are looking for in a neighborhood. There are lots of great neighborhoods within the city as well, despite what people on here say. Historic districts, 100 year old homes, very ecclectic areas, tree lined streets, etc. It's not the warzone people make it out to be. However - it's no central Nebraska! I would think Kansas City is probably similar to Memphis, we're just smaller.
If you want to buy a home, definitely come here several times to look around before you start to look for a house. I also suggest people rent for a year before buying. I have had friends move here and buy a home immediately to move into, just to realize they bought in a rather shady neighborhood, or in a neighborhood that is far away from anything they enjoy.

Out here they do give you a line in the online edition of the Quest Dex if you run an ad in the hard copy edition. But people are less techsavvy here and so most of my referrals (50% easily) come from the paper edition of the Dex.
I agree with the rental idea. Plus we both have homes back here to sell. Real Estate here is holding it's own, but Nebraska usually trails the national economy by about a year. So just as the rest of yall are starting to feel better, things will go south here.
Her job is going to be in a Germantown neighborhood (38119). It seems like a fairly safe place. Your thoughts?

38119 is not Germantown, that's more SE Memphis, which isn't that great. The Hickory Hill area has actually seen probably the largest increase in crime in the last 10 years (around the Winchester/Mt Moriah/Mendenhall area). But Germantown, within the city limits, IS the best area of Memphis in terms of overall safety, schools, houses, crime, etc.

38119 is NOT in SE Memphis. That is Bal-Moral through Kirby Oaks.
PearlBob doesn't know a lot of things about SE Memphis....(I am the expert on that)

This map shows that 38119 is north of 385/I-240. 38115 is Fox Meadows and Hickory Hill, 38125 is Hickory Hill and some of Southwind, and 38118 is Oakhaven/Parkway Village. Part of 38119 however shows a little bit of Southwind.

Correct?
Regardless, Germantown is the best area to live, if you are looking for safety, good schools, and you have a lot of cash to buy a house They do have some apartments there, but I imagine they run a bit more expensive than apartments in other areas.
