Smile Nice apartments around U. of Memphis? Moving in Aug.

Hello all, we will be moving to Memphis in August. My wife will be a PhD student at U. of Memphis. She is not big on driving so looking for an apartment around the college. We are willing to pay up to $1,000 per month. Any suggestions of where to rent would be greatly appreciated. If we need to be further out sounds like East Memphis area near Germantown is pretty safe? Around Kirby parkway and North Quail Hollow Rd (where Kirby Station and Huntes Trace apartments are).

Also we will be looking to buy a house shortly. Have seen a lot of houses in Colonial Acres area in our budget (150,000 to 200,000). Is this a safe area?

Thanks for any help!!!

Hello!

Welcome to Memphis
My uncle works as an attorney on Quail Hollow. The area is near Bal-Moral which is getting kinda sketchy since it is near Fox Meadows. I'd move to Eastgate because of distance to U of M and safety...(I assume you have no children?). They have anything from 1300 sqfeet homes to 2000 sqfeet.

I've heard that Sherwood Forest has gotten bad (West of the U of M) since it also backs up to Orange Mound.

Default Thanks

Thank you for the info. Will look into Eastgate. No children so schools not a concern right now. About how far a drive is it the U. of Memphis from Germantown? See some decently priced apts/townhomes there?

Thanks a lot!

Post Memphis schools

I actually have a link to Memphis already. I worked at a college in Cambridge, MA that has a campus in Memphis mainly teaching in Education. I often talked and emailed with these students and lets just say I can see why Memphis schools are so bad.

I have found a few apartments in Memphis and was wondering if anybody had a comment on them. Especially if they are in a safe area or not.

Uptown Square
252 North Lauderdale Street, Memphis, TN 38105
Looks like it is just south of St Judes and I-40

Gilmore Apartments
6 South McLean Boulevard, Memphis, TN 38104
In Midtown close to Overtown Square

Riverset
100 Riverset Lane, Memphis, TN 38103
Downtown (one of the cheaper downtown)

Overton Park
1220 Overton Park, Memphis, TN 38104

Thanks for any help!

I personally don't care for Mid-Town..

I I lived in Germantown and it took about 30-40 Minutes to U of M.. Sorry if I have misspellings, I am typing on my phone.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like my wife may just have to do some driving. Happen to know of any apartments close to U. of Memphis that are decent?

Thanks!

I think once you cross Getwell it looks kinda scary. Audubon Park Place, and Sherwood Apts are in Sherwood Forest which backs up to the infamous Orange Mound. (don't go there)

Forest Pine is closer to the express way and the Sams on Getwell.....which means it's also close to the Airport (Oakville) which is really bad.

Cherry Gardens is in a decent area.....my Aunt used to live near there in a mansion.

The Embassy would be your best bet

i pretty much agree w/ all of this. forest pine, itself, isn't all that bad, but the area around precludes its recommendation. a pk pl is pretty much a drug exchage market. sherwoo---just add a mix of bullets to the coke and pills and you have a pk. of course, anyone who has lived in memphis for any length of time, know that you risk life and limb in orange mound and throughout the oakville section. many people in that area would steal the crack out of your butt, if your weren't stabbed or shot to death and lying on your back. it has been that way even before oakville mental health center closed. urban renewal should have taken place 30 years ago. but, yet, this area is one which is considered for the transit system/train. it is really scenic coming in from the south loop. take the embassy. it is your only bet in this area.
