A Memphis Subway System
I have created some plans for a Memphis subway system. The train will mostly be underground, similar to the New York City system. I have first chosen some major areas/intersections of the city for starting stations. The train will go from the downtown area and as far east to Arlington. The train will run throughout the entire city and into the suburbs. Here are some early station locations I have come up with.
Downtown
Beale St/Main St (Near Peabody Place and Fed Ex Forum)
Popular Ave/N 2nd St (Near Cook Convention Center)
Midtown
North Parkway/N McLean Blvd
2140 Union Ave
North
Frayser Blvd/N Hollywood St
Austin Pea Hwy (Near Raleigh Springs Mall)
Whitehaven
Winchester/Millbranch
Shelby Drive/Elvis Presley (Near Southland Mall)
A station on Elvis Presley Blvd (Near Graceland)
Hickory Hill
Kirby Parkway/Winchester
Winchester/Hickory Hill Rd
East
1398 Sycamore View Rd
N Germantown Pkwy/Hwy 64 (Near Wolfchase Mall)
This is a quick plan I have come up with. I would like to know if this would be a great addition to the city. It could bring jobs, improve the economy, and reduce car traffic. I would like everyone's opinions on this, thus if I can complete the system, I am looking foward to getting word to the City Council.

Well, I like your idea
It would be much easier to get around the city.
I was thinking that we would need more stations.
I think a Cooper/Young station would be good (my mom grew up on NY st. and hated walking everywhere she went during the depression), Orange Mound station (Park/Airways/Lamar), Airport Station.
I think that one at the corner of Mt. Moriah and Park, one at Oak Court, University one, and a one in Parkway Village would be almost necessary to make it appealing to council.

I would loooove to see a good train network in Memphis. The rail line that parallels Poplar would be ideal for a passenger rail line all the way to Collierville with a few spurs to places like Frayser, Ralegih, Bartlett, Southaven, Hickory Hill, etc.

We can't put a train underground in Memphis.
However, rail is definitely something that should be considered in the future. If someone can figure out how to pay the $70 million - $100 million per linear mile to make it happen, then it should happen.

Here is a proposed map I created. I have included some stations and its color lines. Its not the best, but its something to get an general idea.
The Red Line
Covers the Downtown area and parts of South Memphis.
The Blue Line
Covers Hickory Hill, East Memphis, Germantown, and Collerville
The Brown Line
Covers Cordova, Arlington, and Eads. This is the farthest train away from the Metro area.
The Green Line
Covers Whitehaven and the Airport area.
The Yellow Line
Covers North Memphis, Raleigh, and Bartlett.
The Orange Line
Covers Orange Mound and Midtown.
*Some stations have line transfers where one line ends and another starts.
(At the airport station all lines are available.)
*All lines will lead to the Airport.

How do you propose to fund the billions of dollars such a project would require?

I'm sure Obama could throw it into his "stimulus package".
