Employment Questions
I recently moved to the Barlett area after spending my whole life in Nashville. We are still keeping our home in Nashville because we are uncertain if we will like it here. I am getting somewhat discouraged. I have a Masters Degree in Social Work, and have been providing service to elderly homebound seniors in the Nasvhille area. I have been looking for a position in Memphis for three months but I seem to just get the run around. It appears to me if you are not from Memphis that it's very hard to get your foot in the door. I am intelligent, very presentable, and willing to work with all populations. Any ideas where to seek employment. Thanks. Also, in Nashville we went to a wonderful multicultural church, are there any here in Memphis? The city seems much more segregated than Nashvillians would dream of.

Unemployed In Memphis
It is very hard to find a job here. I relocated here from the Midwest and it took me six months. I learned that people are intimidated by your experience and you have to tone down your skill level just to get in to door. Not to mention taking a cut in pay. Once you are hired, then you can look for positions you were suited for in the first place. Also note a lot of companies have gone out of business here. I took a temporary position first just to say I was employed while I looked for something full time. I've also noticed that people here hire their friends and family first. I got lucky because a new company opened up last year when I got here and they hired me. But in that short amount of time they are laying off at the speed of light. I'll be lucky if I last there a month or so. Good luck to you.

Wow, who knew with all the other problems in this town we were worse than other areas when it comes to nepotism. Combine that with all the bumpkin Human Resource folks here being scared of all the out of towners with their highfalutin "skills" and "experience" and the stringent efforts we make to keep our neighborhoods less integrated than Nashville, it's a wonder anyone can find work.

I just moved here from IL last year and sometimes, well, it's like I'm living someone else's life. There's no other way to describe it. I'm just trying to make the best of it because I know we're here to stay...
On the multi-cultural church, I can tell you about mine. We attend The Life Church of Memphis and it's not too far from Bartlett at all. It's just down Germantown Pkway right next to Royal Furniture. We love it there, as we are an inter-racial family, and we are so welcomed there. People of all nationalities, ethnicities, etc.etc....I know there are several other multi-cultural churches too, I think highpoint is one I've heard good things about too. I just don't know the names of the others. I like our church so much!
On the job thing, it's hard to say. I'm a teacher, and haven't applied to public schools because we live in Fayette County and Shelby County won't take me because I'm not in their city limits. Have you applied to all the public schools or do you not work in schools? I know there's a need for SW, but I think that many of the districts are so under-funded or just have SO many applicants that they can't get to everyone. What about mental health establishments? There's Lakeside, Daybreak, Parkwood, and probably more...My son sees a private LCSW and there are a lot of private SW in this area for children but not as many for adults.
Hope this helps a little, I myself feel displaced. So, I can understand where you're coming from!

Thanks for the information, it helps to know that all professions are suffering not just Social Services in Memphis. Hopefully, things will get better for everyone. I will also give Life Church a try. My husband and I noticed it and I am excited to make a visit. I feel like another world in Memphis, but you must make the best of all situations. Luckily, we kept our house in Nashville so we have a escape.

If you are new to the town of Memphis my suggestion would be to run and add.
The newspaper that I got the best results from when I started a business was named Germantown Shelby SUn Times. The Memphis Flyer also helped.
Last but no least was the Commercial Appeal.
As for the senior care, I would contact Home Instead or Comfort Keepers.
The Eldercare that I know of is ran by Rena.
Try you own add first. Maybe you could contact the Tennessee Health and Human Services of Nashville since they are the captial. This is my advice for now.
Good luck,
Cat

Hey on the church front...check out the Life Church! My fam just became members. It is a great place!
On the job front, I will send you a link to my company's website and if you see anything that interests you I would be happy to 'refer' you....

Look into Youth Villages. They will hire you. It's long hours on a salary, but at least it is work. The pay is probably lowwer than what you are looking for, but like I said it is work. It is better than nothing. I personaly would have stayed in Nashville, they have an office their to. Memphis suck. I only moved here a year ago and want out.
