Thanks everyone for all of your advice. I don't mind if it's small, as long as it is safe and isn't "trailer trashy". I am definitely going to to check it out this summer. I just wanted to get a feel for what the locals around the area thought. They usually always steer you in the right direction.

I am from a small town myself in the midwest so I am familiar with small town life but I have been living in Florida for several years. Husband has the possiblity of a job transfer. Any opinions on this little town would be appreciated

Thanks

Munford is a nice area, We had a house near the schools and both of my kids went to the schools. Munford is a small town that is growing. I don't even know of any private schools around but i haven't lived there for 10 years so there may be now.when I moved to Munford My subdivision was new so you can count on the homes around the school being about 16 yrs old now. It took me about 35-40 minutes to get to work in Memphis from Munford. from 1- 10 i give Munford a good 9 for raising kids in.

Default Munford TN; JUST SAY "NO"

Hi. We are military retirees, and lived in Munford for 8 years, through around
2004. While the elementary school was pretty good, the curriculum choices at the middle school are sparse, and the high school is lacking in the variety of honors and AP courses kids need in order to compete for college slots.
The band is excellent-extremely demanding, but if you have a kid hoping for a ride to college on a musical instrument, you're going to the right place.
The town is experiencing growing pains as a Memphis refugee bedroom community. THere are two kinds of folks there; born & raised, and "you ain't from here." If you have ever seen the movie, "Friday Night Lights", it's pretty much a documentary of Tipton county. The property values are skyrocketing, but the city is ill equipped to provide the increased services needed, so there's a lot of resentment by the natives against the newcomers. Let me put it this way; I once overheard a Munford alderman complaining at a meeting that she wished somebody'd put a "NO VACANCY" sign at the county line. Enough said. The only viable private school in the area is Tipton Rosemark Academy, and it very costly and also very "small town" (we had our child in it for a year).
To muddy the waters some more for you-there's a MAJOR highway planned to run right through the western border of town (Canada to Mexico, I-69 I believe it was called-check the TDOT info website for more.) Now, let's think about EXACTLY what kind of people are going to be transiting this corridor.
Not a good thing. If you MUST live in Tipton county, I would suggest the other side of Highway 51 in Atoka. Be very careful about home buying, though-pretty much everybody with a pickup truck and a magnetic sign considers himself a contractor. I suggest a call to the BBB. We used Wally Sisk as a realtor (he's in Millington) and found him very candid.
Personally, I relocated to Bartlett TN, and we are generally very pleased with it. There is a "school zone locator" feature on the Shelby county school sysem website you can use and will find most illuminating. The best schools are generally considered to be; Oak or Ellendale elementary, Appling middle, Bolton or Arlington high. The Arlington area is also growing rapidly, closer to Memphis, and a little more forward thinking.
Might want to check out a website called "greatschool.net" I think. Lots of good info. GOod luck, and welcome to Tennessee.

Thumbs up Brighton Schools #1

I have lived in East Brighton for 6 years... what a secret!
For the folks looking to raise a family away from the city, yet close enough to commute say, 20 minutes, it's the best deal. I lived in Memphis, Shelby county for 21 years, it's bad, real bad. The city services, taxes, crime and school systems have sunk to the lowest standards. The county system is some what better, but, as such.
As, for the Germantown, Collierville area... it's "richie", and your still in Shelby county!
If I was to do it again, please shoot me.

Tipton County Schools. Tipton County Schools, TN
Utilities: Poplar Grove water department, Southwest Coop Electric,
Super Walmart ( the 2nd biggest is World) built last year!

Oh, I work for the City of Memphis at the International Airport. 20 years!
I have raised 4 children, all now living out of Shelby.

Default Munford - My Kind Of Town

Munford isn't a bad place to live. It's small, but is trying to grow in the right way - unlike the Atoka side of the Hwy. Should point out that there are 3 towns right next to each other in South Tipton County - Munford, Atoka (right across the highway from each other) and Brighton (north about 6 miles). Each town has it's own uniqueness and each serves a rather large Navy community of both retired and active duty folks, as well as gov't employees who work at the Naval Support Activity in Millington - which is the first town south of Tipton County.

Atoka's subdivision growth is too much - and it's over taxing what infrastructure they have, which isn't much. Munford controls the water and sewer - Atoka 'leases' it's share. Munford is not in any rush to grow the 'wrong' way. Smart growth is key. Brighton is very small, but on the move.

It's true that I-69 is coming to west TN, but that won't happen for years. They just announced the route. It will be going WEST of Munford. A plan is already in place for controlling the one interchange that Munford will have.

Munford schools are somewhat overcrowded because of the growth. Brighton has schools up there too - which are newer. Overall education quality is o.k., but nothing to shout about. Tipton/Rosemark Academy (a few miles away) just south the county line is very good, I'm told.

Shelby County is overtaxed and has a lot of issues. That's why a lot of folks are moving out into the surrounding counties. Too much traffic in the Bartlett, Cordova and Lakeland areas. It's crazy over there due to overbuilding. Crime is rampant in Shelby County as well.

Tipton County has it's "good 'ol boys", but for the most part - it's not a bad place to be.

Check out Munford's website at: City of Munford. Also, check out the Tipton County website at: Tipton County Tennessee.

Good luck!!!

I-69 must eventually go somewhere near Memphis, as they have already built a leg of it going from I-55 down to the casinos. It starts right by the casinos and then goes up and intersects a few miles south of the I-240 junction.
