What are good cities around Memphis? (Knoxville, Bartlett: apartments, buy, taxes)

Hubby and I are possibly relocating with out daughter (2yrs) and I am currently pregnant. We have never lived in TN so we don't know much about the areas. The job my husband is looking in to is in Gallaway, TN which looks way to BFE for me. So what cities would you recommend in between Memphis and Gallaway that would be ideal to raise a family and that aren't ridiculously pricey.

We are wanting to start out in a 3bd apartment for now, but in no way shape or form are we willing to pay $1000. We are thinking $800-#850 max.

The suburbs near Memphis are good. I like Cordova. Also popular are Germantown (pricier), Bartlett and Collierville. Millington is near Galloway and then further east is Lakeland, Eads, and Arlington. You might try driving around each of them and see what type of feeling you get from them. I don't like too much country. I like to be close to stores, city access within 30 minutes and a full service post office and library. I get all of that in Cordova.
Investigate the city/county taxes and services. Some parts of Cordova and Bartlett are considered Memphis and as such are subject to both Shelby County and Memphis City taxes (and services). Ask lots of questions before you buy a home. Happy hunting.

Arlington (in Shelby County) and Oakland (in Fayette County) are both very convenient to Gallaway. I much prefer Arlington, but neither is going to have much in the way of apartments. Apartments are limited in Bartlett as well. For that, you'll likely have to go to Cordova area.

Good cities around Memphis are located about 200 - 400 miles east (Nashville/Knoxville).
