Default Vehicle Inspection w/ Expired Tags

I used to live in the county but now within the Memphis city limits. If I take my vehicle to have it inspected will they do it if it has an expired tag?

If not, how can I get it inspected because it is sort of a catch-22.

Do they even look at the tags? When I go every year, I don't hand them any paperwork, I don't have to prove anything. I pull up, they go thru the motions of telling me to do the brakes, lights, etc... they scan the VIN # barcode thing, and then that # is what is on the inspection report. So that matches up when you register it.

Is this right, Memphians? I've done then for so many years, I don't pay attention apparently.

From what I remember: You have to have the inspection in order to renew your tag, expired or not.

Thanks for the replies. I would imagine I would be able to have it inspected but when I was on the government website it said:

Vehicles may be inspected up to 90 days prior to registration expiration. http://www.cityofmemphis.org/framework.aspx?page=600

It just threw me off.

I think that means if the inspection was done more than 90 days ago, it cannot be used; you'd have to have a new one. Although whatever it means, it is not worded very well!

White Station is open 7-4:30 on Saturdays. When I drove by on my way to work I noticed they are often already backed up pretty early in the AM.
This being the middle of the month might make a difference though.

They'll inspect cars with expired tags. When you get your renewal sticker you'll pay full price for less than the full year of coverage though.

No dogs, no cracked windshields, and no smoking cars allowed.
I always bring a book and a bottle of water. Just in case lines are looong.

Good to know! I could have sworn I looked at the link he gave and it didn't list it, but I may have read it too fast. Thank you for the clarification.

Inspection Station folks will only run you V.I.N. They don't check your plates.

Don't carry your Pet, as mentioned before. I went thru 1 time with my dog, and the Jackhole wouldn't inspect the car
