It's both commercial and pleasure. There are scenic cruises, and at Mud Island they have a little marina with private-owned boats. Also, in the harbor area, it's less current-y (between Mud Island and downtown/cobblestones), so people sometimes canoe there.

The Mississippi is definitely underutilized for pleasure. There is something about spending a day on the river that makes it so much more special than going to a lake. Maybe its because you feel a connection to Mark Twain's characters that we read so much about as children. You can just feel the history of the river. Maybe its because you can find a secluded cove and never see another soul the whole day out there. You can find a bank to camp on, and you'll never see anyone except barges passing by. Maybe its because when you're in the middle of it, you can feel its understated mightiness. If you've never been out on the river, you're missing out.

Bless your heart. You must be one of those that live in a gated /secure community. You most likely have everything done for you. Maybe you send your maids out into the JUNGLE to get your groceries etc. Face it, it is the real world out on the Memphis streets. Wasn't there a lady raped /killed in Central Gardens a few months back? Whew! You might should read the commercial appeal. My sister lived in Central Gardens. To cut it short>>>SHE MOVED>>>. You are just luclk so far ..Never think your beyond getting the same type of crimes done to you. , However, Memphis is full of racical tesion, rapes, mulitiple murders , arsons, school fights, sex in bathrooms , drive by's and so much more. Not to mention that all the officals are on the take. Herrington keeps Memphis down on all counts and as Mayor he has pulled the city down. As for the CEO's and Doctors...They are not respective person to all of these things. To be able to be a CEO or Doctor...you must go to work and mettings etc. THOSE SAME DR'S are treating all of these victims . Just ask them who they treat and from what. They might want to be real careful going to and from work ...since they do not need to worry in your neighborhood ...yeah right! You say...Who writes this stuff? I am an X Memphian but I still get the Commercial Appeal and in the News viewing area. I was born and raised in Memphis. Back when it was voted the cleanest city in the Nation. Now look at it.The Light Gas and Water are always in the news and known for rpping off the Memphis people. Many areas think the taxpayers oew them so the slum up the neighborhoods just to have a council meeting to get more money. Then they rebuild and it gets tore down in a few months. NO RESECT FROM OFFICALS OR MOST OF THE COMMUNITY'S anymore. I would not raise a Billy Goat there.

Sex in bathrooms? What? These types of posts are so hilarious.
What little I could comprehend of this post above, it's absolutely ludicrous to portray Central Gardens as being a dangerous area of Memphis.
Bless you, Neshoba. I hope where ever you are, you are not this miserable of a person anymore.

Central gardens is so safe, many of the residents split the not insignificant cost of private 24 hour security patrols!
And for the first time in recent history, there are an incredible number of "for sale" signs, where previously it was almost impossible to find a house for sale in Central Gardens.

Not only is it a rant, it is an uncomprehensible malcontented rant.

Considering moving to Memphis from New Orleans for purposes of college. Apparently TN is the only state not requiring a year to establish residency for in-state tuition purposes. Anyway, a lot of what I've read on this forum sounds a lot like New Orleans. Racial tension, high crime, horrible public schools, general dysfunction etc. I've only visited once and hung out on Beale St, The Peabody, Cooper-Young and thought it was fun and the people were friendly. Well, in New Orleans the murders are pretty much all drug related and if your not involved in that, your fine. Also, it can be really hard to make distinctions between good and bad neighbourhoods, as it's all kind of jumbled a together. A friend of mine lives in a million-dollar house Uptown and there are murders a block or two away,
yet that doesn't affect her personally. A lot of bars have buzzers on the door, so they can get a look at you before they let you in, but as long as you drive to the bar instead of walk you won't get mugged. Question: I am on track with comparing New Orleans with Memphis? The sense I get from this forum is that if you make adjustments and know your neighbourhoods the crime/safety
problem is not that bad.

I think as in all comparisons with NO, good and bad, Memphis is very similar, but just not to the extent of NO. I've never heard of buzzers at bars here, but yeah, within the city, the edges of good neighborhoods may run up against some questionable ones.
