Memphis Police Crimemapper website shows in excess of a burgulary a day in Central Gardens, despite security conscious residents, private patrols, and the ever-vigilant Memphis police department.

one month statistics
crime mapper only covers the last 30 days:
in Central Gardens (not all of it, a one mile radius of melrose and peabody)
36 burgularies
6 aggrivated assaults
20 domestic violence
1 homocide
66 larcenies
41 vehicle larcenies
41 vehicle thefts
0 narcotics
0 rapes
4 robberies
Central Gardens is, however, one of the safest areas in Memphis!!

I, for some reason, can't bring myself to trust in CrimeMapper because I'm not able to find stats on more areas that what I can find stats on.
And from my NO experiences, Memphis and NO are very much alike.

You have to keep in mind, the area AROUND Central Gardens has some pretty run down homes and neighborhoods. I would imagine most of those crimes are done there. OR, are just little thefts like "someone stole a chair off my front porch" meaning it was probably a bum looking to make $10.
It's not like all these burglaries are hardcore criminal masterminds breaking into your home to steal your jewelry. Like any urban area, you have to make sure your outside items are locked up, chained up, etc. Same with your car....if you leave some things, even CD's, in plain site, someone is likely to walk by and break the window just to earn $20 off your used CD's. This would obviously not happen in the burbs, where there are no shady people wandering the streets.
Also with that, midtown is more likely to have street parking. When you park your car in the street, it's more likely to be stolen or broken into, as opposed to the burbs where people have garages and long driveways.

Central Gardens is a good neighborhood. However, the very fact that the people there did feel compelled to hire a private security force for 24/7 security makes it clear that something is amiss in the area.
I would note, though, that Red Acres/High Point Terrace also has private security, and I've always considered that area to be much more 'better' than Central Gardens.
It just goes to show that crime, the perception of crime, and paranoia go hand-in-hand.

Definitely. However, living in Central Gardens and knowing about the association happenings, I know for a fact that there was NOT an overwhelming majority in the area who wanted that security. They did not have enough people who wanted it. So only a handful of people agreed to spend the money for the security, it was not a majority decision. Thus, most people in CG did not feel the need for a security truck to drive around.

i have to be honest with you,i have been a cop in memphis for 9 years, and there is no way i would move into the city limits.look at arlington, germantown, colliervile, fayette county or even tipton county.the city school system is scarey, its ranked as one of the worst in the state, but the county system is one of the better in the state.keep this in mind we have had 93 homicides in shelby county this year and 89 have been within the memphis city limits and only 4 in the other towns in the county.also keep in mind we do not have a metro govt.such as nashville so the stats are a bit misleading.good luck.

Margirls -
If you have lived in downtown Memphis for six years, you should remember that there was a murder in an apartment downtown. Remember the female DJ? There is crime in every major city in the US. You just can't avoid it. Heck, even remote Alaska has crime.
