Yes, there are good things about Memphis
All cities have their pros and cons, and every city has it's problems, but the solution is to try to solve the problems, not move away from them.
Here is a photo post that shows some of the beauty of Memphis:

"Herenton cut the school budget by a TON a while back."
Pearlbob, satisfy my curiosity without attacking me. What proof do we have that simply pumping more money into our school system will produce better performance from students?

What? What date was it when I wrote that??? It sure wasn't recently. And how is saying that Herenton cut the school budget an attack on you? Are YOU Mayor Herenton?

I will answer each of your questions.
"What?"
What proof do we have that simply pumping more money into our school system will produce better performance from students?
"What date was it when I wrote that???"
Not sure.
"It sure wasn't recently."
Does it matter??
"And how is saying that Herenton cut the school budget an attack on you?
I didn't make that statement. Obviously you read what you wanted to. Please pay attention to the question and stop trying to vilify me so others won't agree with my statements.
"Are YOU Mayor Herenton?"
Definitely not!

If you don't have to come to Memphis don't. The schools here are okay.
Do your research if you're dead set against Memphis City Schools. Some of
Bartlett and Lakeland might feed into Cordova High School which isn't bad but used to be great (it was taken over by the Memphis City School system).
Schools everywhere are getting a bad rep (public schools). Tennessee schools rank at the bottom of the nation anyway. Northeastern schools are rated the highest. Massachusetts is number 1.
As for good communities I'd look in Arlington, Lakeland and Cordova. I would look at Germantown, Bartlett and Collierville too. Go into the high schools yourself at all of these before deciding. When you research crime you need to know that crime in some areas is mostly internal and not random. Cordova crime is usually internal. Memphis and its suburbs can be very comfortable depending on what you're looking for. Memphis is a very driveable city with affordable housing. It has a downtown area and of course there's Beale Street. Happy hunting.

Bartlett and Lakeland won't feed into Cordova High School anymore than they'd feed into White Station. Cordova is a city school and as such, Shelby County Schools will not feed into them. They're entirely different school systems.

And even if you don't have to come down to Memphis, I for one would encourage everyone to visit and give it a chance, if not move down here altogether. Great town that I'm looking forward to returning to.

Memphis turned out to be my least favorite TN city. The people are weird. And then Arkansas, forget it! I have no desire to see Arkansas ever again!
