I think people need to calm down I've lived in Nashville,Chattnogga(sp) and Miss. and the only thing is that Memphis is becoming more urban for all the people that don't like diversity; then yeah you probably hate it. I would recommend that you come for a visit and make the decision yourself. I never understood why if people hate something so much they continue to deal with in! There are jobs in Arkansas and Mississippi, really people. Common sense is the only thing you need; you wouldn't in any other city be walking your down @ midnight don't do it here, would you go to the ATM by yourself @ 1:00am where you live now? if no apply that here. Thats all I'm saying hope this helps.

Thanks for reminding me of that. I feel myself starting to accept it as my reality. I need to snap out if it!

Okay what high school(s) serve Lakeland?

I am from a small town and I like small town living...and elbow room and nice people. I also have a son who is in high school and makes straight A's. I don't want to jeapordize anything for him. What are the best towns around Memphis that I might find these things?

What small town in East TN are you in? You can find an area of Memphis that will be like that. The thing is that no matter where your house is you will have to go into Memphis proper to do business at some time or other.
It has an inner city which is like most other inner cities. You should come here for a visit and see for yourself.

And I know a lot of people who are so-so about it but have found great aspects to it that they enjoy. It seems like that's what happened for the above poster.

For many people, the bad does not outweigh the good. That does not mean we are trying to justify why we live here or paint a rosy picture on things. It just means that we have found good aspects to our lives here that outweigh the bad things that might be going on around us.
The great thing about America is that we can move freely between all of our cities and states. I agree. The highways go in and out of Memphis as do planes, trains and busses.

Default new in Memphis

We recently relocated from Austin, TX (a very safe city) and I'm from Scandinavia -where guns are against the law and we have like 5 murders a year. That said, Yes Memphis has alot of crime, but it seems to be mostly in some areas, I live in Lakeland, and have not felt unsafe at all. I see police everywhere, and people are really super friendly and open around here. I would probaly never live downtown, it's weird how one street can be nice with expensive houses and the next street full of pushers. I think that is kind of unique. Normally it would be more divided. I think.
Anyway, I was reading all the horror stories before we made our choice to move here, and was kind of hesitent. But we did it, and no regrets. We have a 1 year old, and are planning to buy in Germantown within the next year, so hopefully the schools will stay exellent in that area. Or else we will have to move. Can't afford to pay 10000$ a year in private schools, and save up for college.
Besides, Memphis is a big city, so if you are from a "small town" and loved that, it probaly wont be for you. I'm a Big city girl -although I am in the Burbs now, I can still escape to the downtown once in a while
Good luck
